my old, reliable, much-upgraded micron just died and I need to find a replacement asap. i've looked at dell and micron and can't seem to find something appropriate

i'm told that the dells have very little room for expansion which is a bit worrysome, and I also can't seem to get a configuration with one of the new northwood p4s and a normal geforce2 (non-quadro) at the same time 😛

on the other hand, micron's are much-maligned for using ddr instead of rdram... yet still charging the same prices as if it were rdram... grr

anyhow, does anyone know of a viable alternative to those two companies, or am I stuck with what they have to offer? I would make my own but i'm worried that I won't have enough time before school starts and i'm pretty much out of the loop as far as what a good configuration would be these days

any help I can get would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

ps: i'm looking for something that will last me awhile... but customer support is not an issue 🙂

Well it does not sound like you want to build it yourself (which would save you a lot of money). So I recommend maybe picking up a copy of MaximumPc magazine and checking out Alienware or Falcon maybe. Expensive but sweet machines.

If you're a hard core multimedia/gamer person, and have the cash to pay for it, I would also recommend the Alienware computers. Falcon also makes nice computers as also mentioned. And if you REALLY got some cash to blow, there's a company called Voodoo that also make high end multimedia machines. Haven't heard too much about them though, other than that they make nice, but expensive machines, for gamers.

Why not go to a local computer shop and see about getting one custom built?

yeah, umm... I need it for school... so the basics (surfing, watching divx, email, chatting, etc.)... then also image editing, video editing, probably some maya... beyond that whatever else I can dream up... buff multimedia abilities are not all that important as I already have pretty nice speakers and a decent sound card... a geforce2 mx or whatever would probably be fine as far as a video card goes, but it would be nice to have a fast cpu and a lot of ram (although I could get less and wait until prices go down, the cpu is more important since I can't just add more 😛)

anyhow, if I really can save money by making one myself then I suppose I can... i'll just need a lot of assistance figuring out the mobo 🙂

I get most of my parts from Newegg.com and mwave.com. I know several people who have gotten the Shuttle AK31A and really like them. It is for an AMD processor and uses DDR RAM. Not sure if you wanted AMD or Intel system.

Hmmph..asuming you have memory, HD, OS, CD/DVD-rom and a case all you need is a mobo, video, CPU, and probably a power supply.

newegg.com is a pretty good source.

Find a motherboard that supports your type of ram (assuming SDram, not DDR, unless your willing to pay for it) ~$100
a CPU, AMD or intel ~$45 - sky's the limit
video card $50 - sky's the limit (Here's a pic of a good deal...search for VISIONTEK Xtasy 5632)
power supply - $35 and up (search for ENHANCE ENP-0735 - 350W)

have fun
