Need help looking for a digital camera mount

So for our research lab we need to get a digital camera along with a mount that's not a tripod but more of a platform that allows the camera to sit flat and move up and down in the vertical direction...has anyone seen anything like this?

We'll be using it primarily to take images of well plates, slides, gels, etc.

If so, what's the proper name for it? We would like to be able to order such a device from large retailers and since funds are appropriated from NSF research grants it's not necessary to look for the lowest price, but it should be from a reputable retailer that allows us to order and apply tax-exempt status.

The "mount" should also have some sort of security lock mechanism that's anti-theft.

If there are camera gurus or other people who have used/seen similar setups in their lab please let me know.

Thanks

Actually this may be more difficult than it seems now...we want the camera lens facing downward and being able to adjust it closer/away from the plates.

If I understand correctly, you are looking for something like this or this.

Since you are in a research lab you'll probably need something sturdier and more precise. This company makes copy stands designed for archiving of old books and microfilm that might work for your purposes as well. I don't have any idea how much they cost so you'd have to request a price quote on their site...

edit: This one is quite a bit more expensive than my two links, but it's designed specifically for professional/lab use: Kaiser motorized copy stand

Thanks. I'm going to forward some of these to my lab and see if any will fit the requirements.
