Hello all.

The topic says it all. I can't exactly narrow down what program or service might be causing this, because I typically go a week (or more) without rebooting this computer, so I don't know what programs, etc. I installed that might have caused the problem.

Anyway, after I enter my password to log in, it generally takes about a minute before the blue Login screen goes away... Then it goes to the desktop, where it finishes loading stuff.

Similarly, when I shut down, the screen goes black and remains that way for about a minute before shutting down (or rebooting).

Any suggestions? I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Just to add some more detail to what I wrote above, since I just rebooted again...

- When shutting down, the screen turns black -except for the mouse cursor-. I can move the mouse cursor around the screen freely, but the entire rest of the screen is black. After a minute of that, it goes to the blue shutting down screen before rebooting.

- When logging in, after I type in my password, it stays on "loading your personal settings" for a minute before it goes to the desktop.

Take a look in the Event Viewer logs, see anything relevant in there?

Just took a look. Nope, nothing out of the ordinary.

On shutdown:
Logoff initiated at 5:19:27 PM
Eventlog stopped at 5:20:30 PM

That's all that's there. So there's probably something that's having trouble shutting down, which is what's causing it to take a minute+ for the eventlog to shut down before reboot.

Before login:
A lot of "Success Audits." Nothing out of the ordinary.

At login:
Success audit (my login) 5:33:42 PM. st
Then nothing until 5:34:57 PM, when logon process RASMAN, and services Telephony and Remote Access Connection Manager start.

So again, there's a minute, 15 seconds in there where nothing is happening according to the event log.

Can you repro the behavior in safe mode?

Hi, thanks for the response.

I just rebooted into safe mode. Same thing -- takes a minute or so to log in, and a minute or so to shut down.

No noticeable difference in this between safe mode and non-safe mode.

Thoughts?

Bad filter driver is one possibility, but seems odd it would impact both startup and shutdown.

Your test of safe mode was safe mode w/o networking, correct?
