Need help. ipconfig /all says "Cable Disconnected"

I just installed a cat5 cable to connect two computers.
The W2K machine using ipconfig /all reports the following:

Please the "REMOVED BY BUPKUS". I thought better than including unnecessarily risky info.

Does this mean my cable is discontinuous? How can I test for this warning?

Oh, I forgot. The connection uses 2 cables. One has an RJ45 connector at one end and a Leviton QuickPort on the other.
I made a crossover cable to connect the 2nd pc to the QuickPort.

Ok, replace the little doohicky (Leviton QuickPort) you mentioned. If it still doesnt work, the cable could be bad. Try using a different one. And next time, test the cable before you put it in a bad spot

What I'd like to do is get a pair of couplers where I can connect a pair of RJ45s with one of them having the 4 twisted pair unravelled and stripped to test for continuity. Of course when I find out which wire, I don't know where, but there are several that aren't used so I can move one in and another out.

Start from the basics - Do you get a link light? If you move the two PC's into the same room and use your same crossover cable, does it work? (A pain, but one of the only ways to test). If not, you've got a bad crossover cable or a bad NIC on one of the machines. If so, your long cable or one of the ends is probably bad.
