I have just learned that there's away to turn my ADSL modem into a router, and I managed to do it, the problem is, that once I've set it to function as a router I didn't manage to connect to the internet, though the router itself was connected.
I know I'm missing somthing, 'cause obviously if the router is connected, then it means I don't have to establish connection (dial-up) myself, but now I need to connect to the router itself... That's what I didn't understand how, can anyone help with this?
Do I need to define a new dialer which connects to the router? By the way I'm using win xp pro...
 
Your router should now have an external IP address (the one from your ISP) and an internal IP address (like 192.168.0.1)

You need to give your PC an IP address in the same subnet as the internal IP on the router (like 192.168.0.2)

This assumes the hardware is set up right - what modem/NIC/cable are you using?
 
I use this modem/router, and I think it is configured well as a router, though I can't be a 100% sure right now, since I'm not all that sure what I'm doing... 😱
Anyway, suppose it is well configured as a router, how do I make my system communicate with it? And do I get different IP for each of the systems I want to connect to it?
 
It says you have ethernet and usb connection, ensure you are using ethernet.

Open a console (start-->run-->type 'cmd'), run 'ipconfig /all' and post the results. If you have no IP address, or an IP in the 169.x.x.x range, something is wrong. If you do have an IP everything is ok, try to ping the router (you will need it's internal IP, get it from the manual).

or you can get the router ip from the ipconfig command. should be the default gateway
 
Anyway, I got it to work now, what I did is I've set the router to be a dhcp server, and connected it to my isp, and I've set it as default gateway, next I checked using ipconfig to see that the subnet IP is similar to the one the router is working on, and as I said all seems to work...
Actually its not as complicated as I thought, once you get the PPPoA or PPPoE deffinition correct, and a couple of other setting, then it all works well.
Anyway, thanks for the help guys. :thumbsup:
