After i tried installing Windows Xp Pro SP2 when the system rebots & trys to start up i get this message & i cant start nothing.

Windows Could Not Install Because The Following File Is Missing Or Corrupt

Windows Root > System32/Hal.dll

Please Re-install a copy of the file.

Now i started my pc up with my other hd which has Xp home installed & i could now see the D drive which is the 300gig & files in it but i need this drive to boot normal. How could i get this fix ? i looked for the file & did see it in the system32 folder.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Well, it does say it is missing or corrupt...

Try copying the one from the XP Home HD (assuming it is SP2). Make sure you have viewing of hidden and system files turned on when you look, too.

That's odd. I've never seen anything like that before. I guess try the SP1 HAL.dll, or a repair install, and then install SP2 before any drivers or other software updates.

How did you install XP pro?

Did you have XP home on another physical hard drive and went ahead and installed pro on another hard drive?

If that is what you did, without changing the boot drive in your BIOS, some files are installed on the old drive.

Go into the BIOS and change the boot drive to be the new drive. Power down. Remove the old drive. Power up and install. Now, you can boot to the new drive with or without the old drive connected.

You will only be able to copy files from the old drive. If you want to boot to the old drive, you will have to change the boot hard drive in the BIOS.

If you want to dual-boot, it is a little bit more complicated.

Yes here's how my drives where set up.

Prim Master - HD w/Xp Home installed
Prim Slave - New HD that i was trying to install
Sec Master - DVD Burner

I unpluged the drive with the xp home on it but my system doesnt boot right so that im able to get into my setup/bios thing. I'm not even sure what my new hd is set on. like for example it doesnt say if the jumpers on master or slave. its not like my other hd which tell me. this one doesnt say nothing.

Im thinking of just reformatting the new drive & just upgrade my home to pro but didnt wanna try as im not sure if i do that will my data get deleted.
