Need help installing Windows XP to second drive...

I have a computer that has a 40GB NTFS drive as IDE-0 (primary master) and an 8GB FAT32 Drive as IDE-1 (secondary master) as well as an old CD-ROM drive as secondary slave.

I was able to boot up using the 8GB drive that had Windows 98 on it, with the windows CD in the CD-ROM drive.

I did a new install of Windows XP to the 40GB drive, but when I tried to change the bios so it booted from the new drive I got the error message "NTLDR is missing. CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot."

What's the best way to install Windows XP to the 40 GB drive and have it boot from there, and then use the old 8GB drive as a second drive?

Sounds like you might have installed WinXP to the new drive, but the boot files it needs are on the old drive.
Can you boot with just the CD & the old drive disconnected.
Maybe you can do a repair and it can put the boot files on the new drive.
Have your SATA ide files on a floppy so you can install them.
That might be your problem to begin with.
Did you install them the first time?

It wasn't a SATA drive... just IDE.

I ended up disconnecting the secondary bootable drive and installing Windows XP from the CD to the primary drive. This worked.

Thanks!

Sorry:eek:
It's sad that I didn't read your information correctly & it was only 10pm.
(not the usual time like this reply)

Glad you got it working!
