Hi all,
I need some help installing WIN98 onto a new hard drive. Specifically I am having trouble with the Windows setup utility.
THe boot sequence goes ok. It recodgnizes the drive. I did go into the BIOS set up and make sure BIOS could auto detect it.
Once the boot sequence begins looking for an OS to load it asks:
1. Boot from HD?
2. Boot from CDROM?
I enter 2.
I then get the following error:
Setup can not install W98 on your computer. An error was detected while trying to read or write to your hard disk.. To quit setup press F3.
So I quit. After some fooling around I discover something interesting and could be the root of my troubles.
It seems that the drive letters are assigned differently from what is normal.
The hard drive's designation is A:
The floppy is B:
The CDROM is D:
I'm guessing that setup assumed the hard drive should be C:. So when it tried to access C: it failed.
So my question is how and where are the drive letters assigned and how do I change it?
