Need help installing Win2k

Hi,

I had it installed a year or so ago and can't figure out how I did it now. I'm pretty sure that it's bootable by the cd, but can't seem to get it to boot. I've selected the cd rom in my BIOS for booting and nothing else and I get to a screen with a c prompt asking for Win98 (because that's the boot disk I used to format and partition the drive).

When I go to format and partition the drive with 3rd party software (MaxBlast Plus), I have to use a DOS boot disk. I usually use a Win98 boot disk. Do I have to partition and format the drive a different way in order to boot Win2k?

TIA,

Sal

I keep getting stuck on the same thing. I use the Win98 boot disk to get cd rom support. I have my BIOS set to boot from floppy, then IDE (hdd) and then cd rom. I get to the screen where it says that it is about to start my system and then it just ends up at an A prompt. I tried typing in setup or install and nothing. I even tried different drive letters.

If I start the system with just the Win2k cd, I get an error saying that I'm missing OS.

Basically.. I can't get Win2k to boot in order to install it. Any ideas?

Thanks again

You can do this straight off of a boot disk in dos, or from a terminal inside windows. Switch to your CDROM drive, then into the BOOTDISK directory. In the BOOTDISK directory, there is file called MAKEBOOT.exe. Run the file, and make your four boot disks. Then all you have to do is pop the first one in and restart.

Or... you can change tot he CD rom drive (where win2k is), change the folder to i386, then type winnt.exe. That will launch the dos installation. Before you do though, try to get a file called smartdrv.exe from your win98 cd and copy it to C: Then run it before installing WIn2k. This will improve the setup speed.

Thats just an alternative method you can do, cause I hate having to put in multiple floppy disks.

Thanks for the replies. I just tried the floppy boot method and that's a major PITA!

I'm not clear on the i386 thing though. What do I do exactly to boot from the cd rom? I read somewhere where you type in something like E:\i386.winnt.exe (I don't remember it exactly, but I have it written down somewhere). The E is supposed to be the drive letter. It didn't work though.

Thanks again.
