As the title says.....

I have the plextor installed on a P5A asus motherboard (original bios) as the master on the secondary ide port, with a kenwood 62x true-x CD-ROM as the slave. both show up on the start up screen (where you can exit to bios) I am running win98 1st ed. w/ all updates from microsoft.com on an AMD k6-2

After installing the plextor and software bundle, and getting the problem described below, i formated my hard drive and tried again, got the same problems described below.

I have downloaded and installed all updates (firmware [1.07] and software [plexmanger] from plextor.com).

Both drives work fine as CD-ROMs until:

I enable DMA in the control panel/systems properties/device manager (as it states in the manual to do so for the plextor to work correctly), and restart:

I get an error upon win98 startup that that states "no scsi host found" when trying to startup plextor manager 2000 and adaptec cd creator as windows starts up.

Also, the secondary bus controller gets an error after the reboot, "this device is not present, not working properly, or doesn't have all the drivers installed [code 10]. Try upgrading the device drivers for this device." The CD-ROMs disappear from the device manger menu also upon restart.

Trying to upgrade the drivers results in it saying that the current drivers are the best available

Also, running aspichk.exe results in it saying that "ASPI is not properly installed. One or more components have been replaced w/ older versions of the software"

In trying to install aspi32.exe, I get the following:

"No qualified Adaptec Products have been detected in this system."

(inside box): "This is an upgrade that either an Adaptec host adapter or an Adaptec version of the ASPI layer be installed on your system. If you are updating a vaersion of ASPI delivered with a non-adaptec application, then you should download and run that program's utility instead."

When i disable the secondary bus controller and restart, then reenable it, my kenwood 62 true x drive shows up in the device manager (it is the slave and the plextor is the master), but the plextor doesn't. The kenwood works fine until i restart, where i get the error with the secondary bus controller again and the two CD drives disappear from the device manger again.

I have not tried burning a CD w/o DMA enabled b/c i don't want to reinstall everything again and have to start over again.
The only way I have been able to get rid of the secondary bus problem is to reformat the hard drive.

I went through about three emails with plextor tech support about the above problem, and ended up creating more conflicts with the master ide bus controller. I finally managed to get back to the point where i just have the problem described in the previous paragraphs, and cannot figure out what to do next.

Any help is greatly appreciated
