Hello all,

I need some serious help with my computer. I've been trying to install a Pioneer DVD-105S (16x, slot) and a Maxtor 80 gig Ultra100 drive for 2 days without any success. So perhaps you guys can point me out to the right direction.

Here's some info you might need to know:
- Azza motherboard
- Award Modular BIOS v.4.51PG
- Award Plug and Play Extension v.1.0A
- Pentium III 450
- 256 MB PC100 SDRAM
- C: (Maxtor 5400, 13 gig) as Primary Master
- D: (Maxtor 5400, 20 gig) as Primary Slave
- E: (Maxtor 5400, 40 gig) connected to Promise ULTRA66 IDE Controller Card
- F: (HP 8200i) as Secondary Master
- G: (44x CDROM) as Secondary Slave
- 250 watt Power Supply
- Windows 98

PIONEER DVD-105S PROBLEM (Assuming I got the jumper setting correct and it's connected to the power supply).
1. I unpluged my CDROM drive (Secondary Slave) and connected the DVD-Rom (set as a Slave), then I re-booted. DOS detected the new DVD-Rom, but after the DOS shows the Windows Start-Up logo, my computer stop responding/frozen.
2. I've tried to switch the master/slave jumpers between my HP CDRW and DVD-Rom, but still couldn't get my computer to load Windows.
3. Tried connecting the DVD-Rom to the Promise ULTRA66 Controller, but suddenly the controller told me that the BIOS for the controller wasn't installed. It could load Windows but both devices connected to the controller (E: and the DVD-Rom) couldn't be detected. This didn't happen when the DVD-Rom wasn't connected to the controller card.
4. Tried to connect the DVD-Rom as a Primary Slave and my C: as a Primary Master. Still couldn't get the computer to go all the way to load windows.
I know for sure that I've set the Jumper (Master/Slave) correctly.
5. Any thought why my computer won't load windows everytime the DVD-Rom's connected?

MAXTOR 5400 80GB ULTRA100 PROBLEM (using the 80-Wire UDMA Interface Cable that came with the retail box)
1. Tried connected this HD as a Secondary Slave, DOS couldn't detect it[/b].
2. Tried connected as a Secondary Master, DOS couldn't detect it.
3. Tried connected as a Slave along with my E: drive to the ULTRA66 Controller Card, it couldn't detect both HD and DOS got frozen.
4. Tried connected as a Master on the 2nd IDE port on the Controller Card, it still couldn't detect both HD and DOS got frozen again.
4. Tried connected as a Primary Slave, DOS couldn't detect it.
5. Tried connected as a Primary Master, DOS couldn't detect it.
6. Finally I used the diskette from Maxtor that came with the HD, hoping that it would help me with the installation. Nope, the diskette itself said there's an error with the new drive.
7. So basically, my computer won't detect this new hard drive.
8. I know for sure the jumper settings were right, and the hard drive is not fried.

I found out that Promise Ultra66 IDE controller can only detect ATA drives, not ATAPI like DVDrom.

Right now I have 2 expensive devices worth $400 just sitting around. Everytime I saw them, I "cry" thinking about the $400 doing nothing... :p

TIA for any advise.

Are you sure you connected the drives correctly to the ide cable? Masters on ends/slaves middle connector. Some drives only work if you put the connector on backwards(red away from power connector)

UPDATE:

Finally I got the DVDRom drive working on my computer. But still couldn't install the Maxtor 80 Gig HD.

I even tried using the Maxblast program from Maxtor to install the drive. And the program itself wouldn't detect the new Hard Drive.

Tonec:
Yeah, I've tried everything, switching the jumper, connector, I even bought a new 80-Wire Eide cable, and still couldn't make it work.

My computer and the Promise Ultra66 EIDE PCI card won't detect the hard drive.

Do you think my BIOS doesn't support an 80 gig HD? It's a 2 years old BIOS from Award.
Or is it the problem of my motherboard which don't support 80 gig HD?
Is it possible that the HD is fried? How do you tell if the HD is fried by static electrocity?
Is it true that fried HD will have some kind of burning smell?

I really getting frustrated with the HD. If I didn't get a good deal on the HD, I'll return it for a refund. :(

Add-on PCI Controller cards don't support CD-ROM/RW/R/DVD drives as far as I know.

As for the Maxtor drive, you mean the BIOS couldn't detect it? DOS doesn't detect anything. Or did you expect it a new drive letter? You don't get that unless you partition the hard drive.

You either have to get the motherboard controllers or the promise controller card to detect the drive. (If it detects "none" or freezes, then it didn't detect it.)

Nope, the diskette itself said there's an error with the new drive.
The drive still needs to be detected by the motherboard bios or the promise controller bios, it doesn't mean that anything is wrong with the drive. The max blast software by itself only correctly sets up a drive that is already detected (it really just sets up a sort of overlay to correct the size detected, it does not actually detect the drive itself)

Does the drive have a "single drive" jumper setting? or a default jumper setting?

Can you update the BIOS of your motherboard or the promise controller card?

Hello Vinny_N,

Thanks for your reply. :)

What I meant was that the BIOS couldn't detect the Maxtor HD, and sometimes my computer got frozen. Also when I tried to connect the Promise Ultra66 Controller, its BIOS couldn't detect the HD, and then it told me the BIOS of the Promise controller wasn't installed. If I didn't connect the new HD, Promise controller told me the BIOS is installed and working properly.

Is it possible that either my motherboard or BIOS or my Promise Ultra66 controller don't support Maxtor ATA100 80gb?

And how can I tell if the HD is not fried? Is there like a burning smell comes from a fried HD?

Thanks in advance. :)

Another UPDATE:

I just got home from my friend house. We tried to install the HD on his computer. He's better knowledge about computer hardware than me. ;)

His computer wouldn't detect the HD also. And he pointed out that the HD were making strange noise, like "clicking" noise. It sounded like there's somekind of part in the HD that got loose and made that clicking noise. I heard it too the first time I tried to intall the HD in my computer. But I thought it has nothing to do with the HD. I thought it was my computer that made that clicking sound.

So the question is, do you think the HD was damaged since both computers won't detect it and the HD makes clicking sound when installed on the computers?

Right now I really hope that the HD was damaged from the first time I received it. It's kinda nice thinking that there's nothing wrong with my computer. :p :p :p

Let me know what you guys think. :)
