here is my setup

Asus A7N8X 2.0 Deluxe
Maxtor 160GB - Primary IDE, Master - WinXP Pro [NTFS]
IBM 60GB - Primary IDE, Slave - [NTFS] where I would like to install Linux to

how do i go about installing Linux Mandrake 9.1?

just the other day, i tried to install Mandrake 8.1 with that setup. didn't know what type of disk format i did on the IBM, but in WinXP, i couldnt see the IBM drive, and in Linux, I coudn't see the Maxtor drive. I would like to be able to see the other drive when I'm in one OS therefore being able to transfer files between the two.

secondly, i had problems with my keyboard and mouse. i use the Logitech Cordless Freedom Duo on the USB. when installing Mandrake 8.1, i noticed it was under the configuration of "PS/2" instead of USB, and the scroll worked in PS/2 rather than USB even though I am running USB. then during subsequent boots, i couldn't get the keyboard and mouse to work under USB but i used another set of keyboard and mouse for PS/2 and they did work.

and once linux is installed, how do i install the nforce2 drivers?

i'm such a newb to linux, but i figure since i had an extra harddrive, and the Asus A7N8X had linux drivers, i figure i give it a shot.

TIA

Nice......

Do a little research :) It'll save you a lot of trouble in the long run if you have a better idea of what you're doing.

just the other day, i tried to install Mandrake 8.1 with that setup. didn't know what type of disk format i did on the IBM, but in WinXP, i couldnt see the IBM drive, and in Linux, I coudn't see the Maxtor drive. Thats because they both use different filesystems. However, there is a way to get mandrake to see whats on a ntfs drive. Just go to mandrake's website and do a search.

secondly, i had problems with my keyboard and mouse. i use the Logitech Cordless Freedom Duo on the USB. when installing Mandrake 8.1, i noticed it was under the configuration of "PS/2" instead of USB, and the scroll worked in PS/2 rather than USB even though I am running USB. then during subsequent boots, i couldn't get the keyboard and mouse to work under USB but i used another set of keyboard and mouse for PS/2 and they did work.
Hmmmm..... I'm not really too sure about this......

and once linux is installed, how do i install the nforce2 drivers?
There should be a readme or something that came with those drivers :) You might want to check nvidia.com for the latest ones though.

i'm such a newb to linux, but i figure since i had an extra harddrive, and the Asus A7N8X had linux drivers, i figure i give it a shot.
Good luck :)

With Mdk8.1, you most likely formatted to "ext2" filesystem (default under 8.1) and no version of Windows will be able to read that filesystem without a third party program such as Explore2fs (now supports ext3 also). I believe "ext3fs" is default for Mdk9.1.

As of Mdk8.1 release, NTFS couldn't be read under Linux, period, but for Mdk9.1 it is enabled by default (though it is read-only!!).

You may not have that problem under 9.1, but make sure Legacy USB is disabled in the BIOS or the comp may hang during boot.

Download the latest version from Nvidia. Read the README!

It is nice that Nvidia is supporting Linux as well as they are, and I will continue to support them for it, but their drivers are still not as good as other chipset drivers because they aren't open source and Nvidia are the only ones writing drivers for them. (There is a lot to be said about the open-source community! ;))

If you have additional mobo/chipset problems read the forums at nForcersHQ.
