Need help installing heatsink

This is the heatsink I am trying to install. I get to step 6 where I am supposed to use force to get the second part of the retention clip thing in place but it seems like it doesn't fit. I spent like four hours trying to push the retention clip in place like they do in the directions but no luck. Hopefully I didn't crack my CPU or anything... Any ideas what I should do? My mobo is A8N32-SLI Deluxe, processor is 4800+X2 (939). It says 939 is supported as well as X2.

Did you try installing it with your mobo removed from the case?

That's usually the easiest way, albeit time consuming... 😉

Well crap. I went out and got a different heatsink (retention clip again), but now I realized I installed the goddamn thing backwards (exhaust is facing towards the bottom) so I have to take it out except that it is impossible to remove... Why do they make these things so ridiculously hard to install/uninstall? I've never had to take so much ****** from hardware before.

No offense, but the AC FreezerPro64 is one of the easiest to install. I'm not sure why you had suck bad luck with it. First time around may feel like you may break the board, but using a bit of force will not hurt it. This goes with all retention-clip-type HSF. Unless the CPU cover was off to expose the core, your 4800+ is not likely to have gotten damaged.

Yeah IDK. I used tons of force on the Arctic Cooler 64 Pro but the retention clip just wouldn't fit for some reason. I did manage to get the Zalman installed after like 4 hours though. One more thing though: I had to install it with the heatsink facing my powersupply (on top of my computer) instead of facing the exhaust fan at the back of the computer because the retention clip thing did not fit through the pipes on the side of the cooler. Is that going to effect my temps significantly? And if it does would this setup still be better than stock cooling? I used Arctic Silver 5 BTW. Thanks.
