Need help installing a Zalman CNPS7000B

I just recently got a Zalman CNPS7000B for my Asus K8U-X (socket 754). The manual tells me I need to place the provided backplate under the motherboard, but my mobo already has a backplate on it (had a stock athlon 3000 cooler before this), and I don't know how to take it off. Any suggestions?
