Need help in NT4.0 concerning printer

boomerang

Lifer
I'll try to keep this short.

I work for one of the big three automakers. We have a problem concerning one of our computers. What is totally amazing about this situation is that we have nobody to turn to for support on this machine. We have literally been told we are on our own.

When we go to print from this machine, the Print dialog box will default to a printer that does not exist on this machine. The printer that is actually attached to it is available, if you click on it from the drop down box. The problem is that many of the people that use this machine cannot remember this.

As I was unable to even look at anything concerning printers as a "User", I went in as an administrator. The bogus printer is not even listed. The actual printer is, and it is set as the default printer. I'm certain the bogus printer is a network printer because it's description starts with "\\". This machine is on the corporate intranet. How this bogus printer showed up on this machine is a mystery.

I searched rather extensively through the registry, and everything I could find relating to printers has to do with the real printer, not the bogus printer.

I know nothing about NT, and nearly nothing about the registry. This printer situation is an annoyance, not a major problem, but I would still like to remedy it if I could. I told my boss I would help out if I could.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Try removing all printers, then searching registry for "printer" and removing references to any uninstalled printer that still shows and finally reinstalling the existing printers.
