....I have a few small networks that use ICS to share the internet with the other machines at the location. What I am trying to do is use a port mappper to allow me to connect to the machines behind the ICS machine with VNC. So far, no luck. I try setting the machine behind the ICS with port 5801 & 5901, and then map that port to the ICS machine (actually, map port from ICS machine to the machine behind the ICS), but with no luck so far. Anyone have any luck with this?

Doesn't VNC use port 5900? We use VNC extensively at work & I'm always getting holes punched thru' firewalls on 5900 to enable VNC to work.

If I'm talking rubbish you have my permission to slap me around a bit with a wet trout ;)

russ,

No, you are correct. VNC uses port 5900 by default (5800 for java client, i.e. browser), but you can specify a different port if you like. I'm trying to do this so that I can access all the machines behind the ICS machine, thus I have to configure different ports for each client machine. Thus connecting to www.host.com:5900 will connect to the ICS machine and www.host.com:5901 will connect to a client machine behind the ICS machine.

-EDIT-
BTW, I am using AnalogX's Port Mapper, trying to get the connection to work. WHat I have done is forwarded ICS Machine ports 5801 & 5901 to the client machines ports 5801 and 5901, and have seupup the client machine's VNC app to accept connetions on port 5801 & 5901 (you actually just type in 1). Just doesn't work though. :(

...mid-morning bump (replaces the afternoon bump as I won't be home until late this evening). ;)

Well Jay, I would try another port mapper as I've had some trouble with AnalogX's portmapper before... it works fine for some stuff, but not so fine for other stuff... dunno why either :( I had a hard time trying to find other portmappers tho' but maybe you have better luck. I did use some stuff called SyGate or something for an interim period before moving to a linux firewall/gateway.

Sorry I couldn't help ya out, but if everything else fails load Mandrake Security on that gateway machine (provided it's dedicated) and use the portmapper in that one... works really well and is NOT hard to use no matter what you think of linux.

Jay-

I was going to try the same thing here at the office but the ISDN router has a limited amount of mappings allowed in the firmware. There aren't enough for all of the nodes I need to access so I end up nesting VNC. VNC through the firewall/router to my workstation, then run VNC on it to the other systems on the LAN. It adds a bit of lag to the process, but if all goes well, I don't need to use it that often.;) Good Luck.
