Need help in Grim Fandango

I am in year 2 trying to get my union card. I became so frustrated that I had to look on the internet. Now, I am in the elevator with the forklift and I know that I am supposed to drive it trough the opening to the secret door, but it moves to fast. By the time he turns around and climbs on there I am alll the ways at the top. Can anyone help me? I know it's old, but it's such a good game I want to beat it.
