need help in determining appropriate cpu for the following

i will be doing running processor-intensive applications. does that equate to an intel or amd? i understand a little about the difference in architectures between the two but at a very rudimentary level. and i can't afford to be wrong about this...

I would go for a P4C but it depends on what applications you will be running. If they are all about the MHZ then the P4C is your best bet.

i will be doing speech recognition. my budget right now is fairly small, but want to plan out my low, meduim, and high end solutions.

small budget, there is no question what the solution is: AMD

depending on how small your budget is i'd go with something like this:
epox 8RGA+
1700+ B
512 HyperX
37 GB Raptor or a 80 GB WD SE (the raptor is about twice as much but definetly worth the money if you can afford it)

overclocked, that will give you at least a nice 2 GHz setup
