I installed an AT power supply in my mother in laws computer because the fan went bad on her old one. Well now the thing wont post? If I pull the one side of the main connector with the blue and yellow wires off the Motherboard it will post but cant find the floppy or keyboard.

I figured I had a bad power supply so I put the old one back in and now its doing the same thing? This makes no sense to me anyone have any ideas?

There is a red and black small wire that might be the culprit? It comes off the power supply and I assume this was for the led mhz display on the front of the case as without it plugged in this doesnt light up however i didnt see where this wire came off of when i originally pulled the powersupply out.

Also there is an orange black and white small wire that is labled turbo sw which wasnt plugged in but im pretty sure this one was never plugged in as it was bundled up in a rubberband.

Please offer any suggestions as I really need to get her computer back up and running!

Thanks

What do you mean, "If I pull the one side of the main connector with the blue and yellow wires off the Motherboard it will post but cant find the floppy or keyboard." Sorry, I'm not quite understanding your problem.

It sounds like your "new" PS might have shorted out something on the mobo, but don't hold me to it. Personally, I've never heard of any PS with any small wires coming out of it though.....

Sorry I'm not too helpful, don't know too much about PS's, but keep bumping and I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable guys will take a peek at your thread and help ya' out. Good luck to you!

The wire coming out of the power supply wouldn't have anything to do with the MHz display. This could be a hardware monitor wire to checkup on the status of the power supply.

The turbo switch (turbo sw) connector is for older systems that had the turbo button. I don't think any case now has that button.

What processor does she have? I want a better idea of how old this computer is.

Perhaps you have the AT power connectors placed backwards. The BLACK wire on each connector should be in the middle next to each other. If they are not, you will never get anywhere and you may have damaged your motherboard.

Pretty much never plug the little 2wire from the power supply into anything on the MB, It's a good way to set the wire on fire and make a nasty smell.

LOL well I suppose its in the right spot then. Hrmm Processor is a p2-166 and yes this case has a turbo button and an led display that displays the mhz lol. Its pretty old. Could it possibly have anything to do with the dangling turbo sw lead in this case?

The 2 connectors are on the motherboard the correct way. Hmm what else I had to pull the wires from the switch to install it but as long as the switch powers on powers off everything there should be correct right?

What else...I just dont know the thing is the hard drive wont spinup and the thing wont post unless I pull the left connection from the motherboard. Dont know how else to describe the left connector its the only one that has colored wires the other one has all red white and black i believe. this one has blue and yellow and i think orange as well as red and black.

Would it make any difference which devices were plugged into which outlets of the power supply? Thats the only thing that could be different.

If I did fry the motherboad I dont see how I managed to do it as it is pretty much straightforward...sigh

I have no idea what you are talking about with the left connector- do you have a digital camera or a scanner so we can see what you mean?

BTW, there is no such thing as a p2 166MHz- there was a Pentium 166MHz, Pentium 166MHz w/ MMX, Pentium Pro 166MHz. :p

Pull the two little wires from the psu off the mobo (leave em disconnected). And plug in all the necessary components. Make sure that all of the leds and switches are set up correctly. You may have fudged them. Good luck..

The 2 little wires arent hooked to the motherboard they are hooked to the led mhz display on the front of the case. The only led wire i might have fudged is the one labled turbo sw as it was disconnected but looked as if it was never connected and the other small red and black one that comes from the psu because I didnt see where it came from but the mhz display works with it plugged i and doesnt without it so im assuming thats correct.
