Not to stir up any AMD vs Intel trouble, but thermal throttling is a big plus for the P4s 😉.

Newer AMD mobos have similar features

I've never liked the Volcano series ever since I removed it from my T-bird rig. Too loud, and a pain to install and remove. Pay the extra for an Alpha Pal 8045 or a Swiftech MCX 462 or a Thermalright SK-6 or SK-7 and never have to worry about a heatsink combo as long as you own a socket A CPU.

So this is what I did... I went to Fry's returned the burned CPU yes the burned one and they refunded me the money. I got the same model XP 1700+ AGOIA again and install it. Applying new grease to the CPU using the old heatsink/fan. While I'm afraid that the mobo + video card had been dmg I bought an Asus Nforce2 Deluxe with a 9500 Radeon Pro.

The first thing I test out was the CPU install it on my same old equipment and DAMN IT! that thing worked. So what now? I must return the 9500 pro and Nforce2. I am very sad lol.

You also have an Asus! Don't say it was the deluxe version 🙁

We haev the same thought patterns for Pcs (I also want a 9.5k pro)

I'll never forget the smell when my first of 3 Athlon XP 1800+ chips fried. (one fried, the others were replaced for OC'ing reasons).

Tsk tsk tsk.

They didn't have to take it back you know. They could have easily said no - it usually is user error when a processor cooks itself. I am surprised that they did; consider yourself fortunate on that, J5im8yo.🙂 Make darn sure though that those clips are on all the way. I had a Chrome Orb that wasn't clipped on right; I forgot to check it, and a Tbird 900 paid the price.
Want a secure retention mechanism? Get an Alpha 8045 or something similar - 4 bolts that go through the motherboard. It'd probably break the CPU socket and a chunk of the motherboard out before it'll let go.😀 Very good cooler; my main and secondary PC's use 8045's.

Shoot...Now i'm scared of sticking my volcano on my computer 🙁

I got a 1700+ tooo!!

Should I just return the volcano 9 or no? Seriously...

I installed a volcano 9 on my 1700 about 2 months ago. Its scary as hell when you are doing it, but once you get everything on their firmly it is well worth it. The fan is great, i really love the thermal fan speed control.

Yes, its scarier than most installations, but with some precautions, its quite simple (but not worth it for the cooling you get IMO):

1) Place masking tape around the socket 462 where the bracket holders are placed

2) Get a flat head screwdriver and a pair of needle nosed plyers or angled needle nosed plyers.

3) Firmly push the screwdriver into the HS bracket and push down FIRMLY . Use the plyers to guide the clip onto the bracket the rest of the way.

4) Press on the clip from the side to ensure it is fully locked onto the socket.

( i guess he did'nt know about enabling overheat protection in the bios)

Would an EpoX 8RDA+ board have this feature? (Or an Asus A7n8x) I'm gonna be building my first comp soon and can't afford to fry parts. I also want to overclock with a 1700+ just a little by upping the FSB in the BIOS.

And how is the retail HSF that comes with retail Athlon XP's? Do I need to buy thermal paste for it?

I just removed the fan and the thermal shroud and installation of the HS was a breeze. If you don't remove those two items it is a pain to get it to clip right since the fan and shroud blocks your view of the clip.
