Need help...............Half Life Is really dark...

A friend in my dorm can barely see to play half life and in other games. I mean, it is incredibly dark in comparison to mine. He has a Gateway computer (p2-400, tnt video card, 128 Megs Ram....).

All the contrast and brightness controls are at full, the in game controls are at full, and even adobe gamma is set to bright. He is running dx8 and the latest drivers from gateway.

Now, on his video card, we had to set the hardware acceleration down one notch because it was freezing his computer up whenever he would open any media file.

Is there a text file setting to change in the game, or do you think that his video card is a p.o.s.

He really does not want to have to buy a video card since that might never happen due to funds. If it is the video card, how can we prove it to gateway?

Look to change brightness in the drivers. If he has "Digital Vibrancy" as an option, turn that up a bit. That really helped me, but I blame most of my troubles on the stupid shadow-mask monitor I have.
 
thanks for the suggestion..havent had time to try it yet, but we did find the .inf file for his monitor and it is a little bit brighter, but not much..
 
Actually, q3 is fine, but half life and unreal are dark....

Hes happy right now that he can see a little better, so thanks guys.
