Well, some kid T-Boned my car (drivers side) last Friday. I am sure that it will be a write off, cause I don't see any way they are going to fix it. Hence, I need to find a new car.

Question 1: Are there any good online used-car search engines?

Question 2: I was thinking about looking into repo's and goverment seized cars. Anyone have any Pro's or Con's to this?

Question 3: Any suggestions on a used car would be helpful. My price range is from 6,500 US down. Domestic only please (Ford, Chevy, Mopar).

Please, please someone help me! :)

Thanks! :):)

Yakko- LOL! :)

Yeah, but this kid already had his girlfriend in the car, since it was Homecoming night for his highschool. Hmmmm...no wonder he went through the stop sign...;)

Glad you seem ok physically.

Look at the thread on high mileage cars and tell them what would have happened to you if you were driving a GORE ECONOBOX.

Chooie- Thanks for the link, I'm checking it out now! :)

thebestMAX- No kidding! The kid was driving a 1998 Oldsmobile 88 Royale. After I got out of my car (climing through the passenger window) and brushed most of the glass off me, I looked at his car. It was still running, the fan had kicked on (it wasn't rattling, so nothing had pushed into it) and it looked like someone had just pushed the bumber back and under the front end. That was it. His windshield wasn't even cracked. Then I walk around to the drivers side of my car. From the front seem of my door all the way to the start of the back tire was pushed about 8" in. The beam right behind me that the rear door attached to clearly took the brunt of the force. For real, the first thing that popped into my mind was: Thank GOD (and whichever one you choose, it don't matter) that I wasn't driving an econobox!

Man, let me tell you, when I saw that big Olds coming in, I knew that I was F'd. I was expecting to get seriously hurt, but so far, all I have is minor aches and pains. I've never believe in driving those little econobox's (Jap or US) and this just reinforces my belief that I'm more important than a few bucks of gas a year.

My next car: Domestic, 4-door, V-6 or V-8. I see Gore's for the environment..well that's good. Time for him to get his ass out of the gas-guzzling bullet-proof limo he rides in and take a Honda to work. Lead by example they say...

Fix'd typos.

You want indestructable? You buy the same car the kid had!:)

What about a Pontiac Aztek...those look stable, and since no one can get one, I bet you can haggle down to your price range, lol!

Anyways, here's what I would get if I was shaken like you:

1)77 Chevrolet C/K 150 Short Bed
2)85-88 Chevy C/K5 Blazer(the big one!)
3)'88 Volvo 740 Turbo(volvo's owned by Ford now)
4)89 Saab 9000 Aero(Saab's owned by GM)
5)Pink '57 Cadillac El Dorado!! WAHOO! LoL
6)87 Buick Estate Wagon. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Seriously though...it was indestructable in Adventure's in Baby Sitting starring the once cute, Elizabeth Shue

However, I too was t-boned...at 40mph by a Ford F-150 in my Mazda Protege(aka epitome of econobox). Only had to get my door replaced, as well as a new front left fender.

Edit: number 4 should read:
4)89 Saab 9000 CD Turbo

AND number 6 should read:
...starring the once cute, but now beautiful, Elizabeth Shue.

SuperGroove- Cars only! I highly doubt my dad (where I'll be taking a loan out from:)) will let me get a Volvo or Saab. I won't even comment on #6. :) And I don't like pink. :) A kink in the works is that my dad works at the Ford Assembly plant in Chicago. It sort of tilts (OK, tilts like the Titanic before it went down) him towards Ford. The only reason I got the Acclaim was because or neihbors were getting divorced and wanted to just sell it off as they already had 2 nicer cars. They knew I was looking for a car (my all original 86 Aerostar with 178,000 on it was getting long in the tooth) so they called me over and said, "How much would you buy the Acclaim for?" I took it for a test drive, was impressed, and decided to lowball them at 3500. The guy goes, "Sold!". Not a bad deal...

As for getting T-boned my a F-150 going 40: There is no physical way you could only have had a door replaced. The bumper on an F-150 is almost as wide as your car is long. Just a door...

SuperGroove- Nope, I was driving my Acclaim when I got T-boned.

Actually, it was a great car. The first time I took it out (the test drive) I thought that it was decently quick for a Grandpa car. Then, that weekend, I put a new fuel filter, Bosch O2 sensor, battery, 8.5mm wires, new cap and rotor, Bosch +4 sparkplugs, and rigged a K & N Air filter up to the throttle body.

Even with the automatic and the 71,000 miles it had on it, it would take a stock Camaro up till about 65-68 and would make a stock Mustang V-6 look not good. A nice little sleeper. Now, it is sleeping permanently! :)

See, now that not the same as getting T-boned: ---->^

1986 Parsienne :)
305, 27mpg on the highway (don't ask for the city mileage :p)
170k and only 1 on road breakdown :)
Still breaks the 225/70/15's loose nicely (in the wet )
BTW: You might not wanna try to park it though :D

Otherwise, 1993 Lumina's with the 3.4 liter 200hp look good, only 2 door version I think.

You should be able to pick up a 95-96 Ford Contour for about that price. Shop around, and you can find a really nice loaded one.

They are very strong. Stupid me hit a guard rail at about 40 mph and came out perfectly fine, cept for a small scratch on my nose (healed in 4 days) from the airbag deploying.

I've seen pictures of a Contour that rolled 2 or 3 times where the driver just climbed out and started cursing at his mistake. Another girl was tboned in the manner you describe, and although her car was totalled, she was fine.

Check em out. Nice, reliable cars.

Viperoni- :) I've actually rode in a 3.4 Lumina before, and yes, it did pull strong. It may take more effort to sway my dad over from Ford to Chevy than from Ford to Mopar. :) But yeah, a 3.4 Lumina is a sleeper (not a strong one, but a sleeper none the less). :)

perry- Yeah, I been looking at the Contours. Problem is, the one I want (2.5 V-6) goes for a little more than 6500. The 6500 figure is probably even a little high, as I'm sure the guys insurance company will low ball the *hit out of me. I'm definitely looking at the Contours though. That and the V-6 Taurus SHO's. :)

Both are very helpful - good luck finding one!

EDIT - noticed you had an Acclaim. Maybe you should look into a Spirit R/T (Dodge version of the Acclaim) - Come complete with a 2.2 Turbo III (Intercooled) putting out 224HP! Heh - maybe it's a little extreme, but if you were used to the Acclaim... =)

genocide- Hell Yeah!!! :) The Spirit R/T would be sweet! Only problem is: Find one/Find one near me (Chicago or Carbondale). :(

Thanks for the links (and effort), I'll be sure to check them out.

genocide- No, that's no where near Chi town. But, for that R/T (if its in good shape with low miles) I'd take a little road trip! :)

Now, that is a real sleeper! :)

How bout something along the lines of a Crown vic/Caprice/diplomat? They are all big, have v8s, and if they are painted right everybody gets the hell outa your ways cause they think you might be a cop :).

genocide- I e-mailed the guy and he's in Illinois (same state as me!). Only problem is that the car has 100k on it. :( It's a 91 Spirit R/T. A little too many miles for me...

thedarkwolf- Actually, I do a lot of highway driving, so one of those might not be that bad. And your right about the cop thing! :)

Thanks for the help and suggestions all! :)

Ahh yes.. The SHO's. Yum yum. Those were kick ass cars. Friend of mine bought one then had to sell it quickly because the tranny in it was going down the tubes and didn't have the money to throw into it at the time. He had just totalled his Contour a few weeks earlier. But he said that the SHO was awesome.

Not sure about the pricing of those. Haven't really researched em.

95 SE V6 5spd w/ cloth and no moonroof should go for under 6500 pretty easily. You'll have to look around a little harder to get leather and moonroof.

genocide- Yeah, it would have. It turns out my cousins uncle (I'm not related to him) is a member of the Shelby Dodge club...goes to all the meetings and all that. So, I'm going to have him see if any of them have or know of anything that's for sale. Bummer about that R/T though. :(

perry- Yep, the SHO's were/are pretty fast (even stock)...the trans problem was common as I understand it because in the early SHO's (at least with the manual tranny) you had to push the clutch all the way to the floor. I you didn't, then after a while you'd nuke the synchro's. If your friend had the manual, I'm thinking that's what the problem was. Ford corrected this for the last couple of years the old SHO was around. Definitely keeping my eye out for one of those! :)

If you're going the fullsize sedan route, check out the classified ads for people selling ex-state police Crown Vics for like $3,000-$5,000 with 100k miles on them. They are detective cars, which means no repainting is necessary. Most of them still have the spotlight and flashing headlights, but no colored lights or siren. And best of all, they have all the police package bonuses ;)
