Need help, got a problem. One of my ip connections keeps crapping out.

I hope someone can help.

Here is the problem:

I have DSL, with the modem going into a hub, then out to three computers. All three have their own static ip.

Two of them are working fine, but one of them keeps timing out, or goes completely down for a period of time. When it connects to the internet, it can last 20-60 seconds, then goes down again.

I have a hard time believing it is in the computer, nic or lines here, as I can see the other computers on the network, ping them just fine, as well as transfer files.

I cannot ping the isp.

What could this be...any idea?

This is not a good weekend to have this happen.
Could it be a bad card at the isp serving that ip?

Thanks!

Doubtful. That "card" is probably some sort of router. What's serving the IPs is some sort of box running DHCPD.

More likely someone else is trying to use that IP. IP HiJacking IOWs.

Damn, I have to fix this...but how?

My isp has assigned me static ip for all of the computers in the house. How can I find out if someone is using the same ip, or trying to?

My first guess is that the IP has also been assigned to someone else and your machine is fighting for it. With the suspect computer disconnected from the network, ping the IP from one of the other machines. If it is pingable, this would surely be the case. Otherwise, swap IPs on two of your machines and try again. I am willing to bet your ISP is at fault here....Which DSL provider do you use?

That would certainly tell you if someone is stealing your IP. You can also give your ISP the MAC address of the NIC in that computer then they can compare that to what's been assigned to that IP next time you have problems.

I can't ping it anymore, either connected or disconnected. It keeps timing out.

I don't understand this. Could it be a bad nic?

Edit: I can ping it about every 60 seconds, then it times out. 🙁

Could be. Could be corrupted files as well. I'd try ripping and reinstalling all the network components and see if that helps. If that doesn't fix it then I'd probably try a different card.

The NIC isn't sharing an IRQ is it? Most times this isn't a problem, but some cards/systems don't like that.

No, it's not sharing.

Damn, ok...I'm gonna uninstall all the components then reinstall it. If that doesnt work, I'll try a different nic.

Thanks!

Well, uninstalled the card, as well as any traces of the driver, or components.
Moved it to a different slot, rebooted, redetected, installed driver, configured components.
It hit the web, I went to download a file and it made it to about 5mb, then timed out again.

I'm at a loss. Maybe it's the card, but I have a feeling that whatever router is handling that ip is the problem.

The Static IP assigned to you, are they all from the same range using the same masks? Sometimes it's the backbone of your ISP. They sometimes issue different IP using different backbone and one bacbone is timing out witht he other. Tell your ISP your problem. They could check if your problem is hardware or your the backbone that was assigned to you.

I had to ask two different DSL providers to change IP & backbone because the one that the ISP assigned could not connect to a particular IP.

Goodluck

What?!?!

I don't think you have a clue here. Someone BS'd you in a mighty bad way.

In short: no. Not the problem.

[edit]Alright, I reread this, and while this could be the problem, it's so rare that it's not worth discussing.[/edit]

I emailed tech support, initially hinting that someone "may have hijacked my ip". Less than one hour later, things suddenly worked again. I'm sorry, but my hardware was not the problem. 🙂

I sometimes experience the most unusual things. I just tell them as I see them!🙂
