Hello, I just purchased a Dell Latitude Cpi that seems to have a Bios pw on it and I cant load a OS to the HD that I installed because it wants the cmos pw. Is there a way to delete it or reset the thing so I can load a OS to it? I know Dell probably has a way to do this but they will probably only want to give that info to the original owner on file and this LT has changed hands many times by now and I have no idea who the orig owner is.

Has anyone ran into this and called Dell and they give that info to you? Or does anyone know how I can get rid of it myself? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

If you legally own the machine...

Go to dell.

You should always get the machine transferred to your name.

p.s. How come you bought the machine knowing the BIOS was password protected? Just ask the former owner.

Yes I legally own it... I purchased it from Ebay. Now whether that guy obtained it legally I have no clue, I guess I'll find out when I call Dell. It may have changed hands 3 times or 12 times by now, I dont know.

And I didnt know it had a cmos pw on it otherwise I would NOT have purchased it.lol

Thanks for the advice! :)

Yes, it is possible. You have two options if the above does not work.

1) Get a program like KillCmos (google for it) and put it on a floppy or burn it to a cd rom. This only works if you have boot from hard disk AS WELL AS boot from floppy/cd drive enabled. (not very likely)
Put the floppy/cd in during the boot and click boot from disk and kill the psword.

2) Open up the laptop until you see the cmos battery (you'll notice it) on the motherboard. Remove it for 30 minutes and then put it back in, This clears the CMOS memory.

Fantastic Frightcrawler! I'll give these a shot. I possibly could get the machine transferred in my name from Dell but I'm betting they will want some info that I wont have. Not to mention if I ever get thru to a person and then if they speak fluent english that would be like 1 in 10,000 odds.

I'll try your 2 suggestions tonight. Thanks!!!
