Need help getting PC to recognize new card

Have a Presario SR5250NX and am trying to get an ASUS EAH5550 running. The PC's simply not recognizing the card.

I've upgraded the BIOS from here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...tem=pv-60493-1

I upgraded the power supply to 450 watts

I have the setup BIOS set to PCI x16.

PC specs are here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...null&site=null

and this is the card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...tem=14-121-407

Is there an incompatibility between the specs and the card being DDR3 2.1, or am I simply missing something?

That board shows that it has onboard graphics... so you'll need to go into the bios settings and disable that, for it to recognize an externally mounted card....

Well, I hit F10 at startup and set the option to PCI e x16 followed by save. And I confirmed later that that's the setting it held.

Did I do something wrong, or do it in the wrong place?

Thanks.

set initial display to pci-e in the bios. then in the device manager you should have the integrated video disabled(not uninstalled). turn off pc and make sure the cable is plugged into video card and turn it on.

btw there was really no need to upgrade the psu for your setup.

Yeah and 99% of motherboards default to the pci e installed videocard automatically so I doubt that's it either.
HP/Compaq has always defaulted to pci for some reason.

EDIT: OP, you are also going to need more system memory as 1gb is not enough to play games.

Disabled the Intel display and restarted PC with the screen plugged into the new card.

Didn't get far... it hung on startup and the monitor, an Acer LCD, had the message it was not connected to the PC.

Held the power switch in until it shut down. Then I connected monitor to the motherboard plug and it started right up. Reset display to 1920 x 1080. Back to square one.

The card is inserted properly. I installed the maximum 2GB memory when the PC was new.

The ASUS installed "smart doctor" program reports it cannot find an ASUS graphics card, and when I click on OK the program reports a problem and that it needs to shut down.

I feel like I'm in a darkened room and staring at a lightswitch I don't know how to use.

Help appreciated.

Perhaps the motherboard just doesn't work with PCI-E 2 or 2.1 video cards.

Or maybe the card is dead.

Slim chance: Maybe there is a jumper setting on the motherboard?

How, or where, can I verify if the card is not compatible with the motherboard?

According to ASUS, it's backwards compatible. Compaq would only refer me to the card manufacturer.
