Need Help: Getting "Error Copyying File or Folder" Not enough Free Disk Space

I am trying to transfer a 6GB file from my laptop to a portable media. I have used both a mp3 player with 8 GB free and a External HDD with 144GB free (Both USB 2.0) and when I try to copy the file I receive an error that states there is not enough free disk space. . . I'm Stumped on this one. Help!
