I have an AsusA7V mobo, Radeon Le, Athlon 1ghz 200 not overclocked, WD 30gb hd, sb live value, intel chip modem, generic floppy...windows 98 (i think SE cuz the SE cd key works)

i have 2 fans, one over the athlon chip and one that pulls air out...

I've used mobo monitor and the first sensor is at 41, the 2nd sensor is at 66 and the 3rd sensor is at -32(???)...

I get crazy errors, sometimes i install applications and it screws up...namely, it freezes or the blue screen comes up, i try to reboot and either i get multiple errors (kernel, msvgr illegal operations, the dreaded blue screen), or the registry fixer comes up (reverts back to where i had nothing installed, and i have to reinstall my hardware) and i have to reinstall windows..or even format the hard drive(i've done this maybe 10 times over the summer)...during windows installtion, when it checks for plug 'n play items, it would get crazy errors also and i'll have to repeatedly reboot until amazingly it will install thru the errors....it's a cycle, i tried using a new HD but i got the same errors during installtion of windows...could it be the heat? i tried using a cheaper 8mb video card (whic doesn't get as hot) and i get teh same errors...can't play anything....I try to run Unreal Tourn. it'll either close by itself or i get an error and it closes...same thing for other games....I just pretty much get errors everywhere, especially when i try to play games or install them...in one really bad instance, i tried to play BG2 and the screen freezes, i try to reboot and i get windows protection errors, and other craziness, finally had to reformat...

i haven't touched my motherboard or anything physical either. It worked fine till i came back home from college. Any help will be appreciated

Run the system without the SB Live! card, modem and any other interface cards but the video card (Radeon or the 8 MB card doesn't matter). Uninstall the cards before removing them, BTW.

If the system runs stable now, start adding cards until you find the culprit. Otherwise it could be the motherboard.

I'll try that. But my modem is new and the HD is new. That means the only thing left is the SB Live and the motherboard. Could my windows version be screwed up? I'll try to use another version of Win 98 SE or maybe even 2k. But what could be wrong with the motherboard? I haven't knowlingly changed anything on it. Could applications or anything from the HD screw up the MB? Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

As for errors, i get kernel32(?) errors, windows protection errors, registry errors (prompting me to fix them or auto fixing them), explorer errors, blue screen errors, errors so bad taht i can't startup windows or even reinstall windows sometimes and have to reformat. Then i get more errors when i try to install windows (even tho it's freshly formatted, they occur usually when windows installation detects for plug and play cards) so i thought it was my HD. Thanks again.

The fact that the modem is new is not important. Just strip the system of all parts except the vital ones. A reinstall of Windows would be a good thing to do next. I assume you've a copy of Win98 you can use?

Yes, i'm getting a copy of win98 SE and a copy of 2k to try also. I just hope i don't get errors during the reinstall of windows with the new operating systems with just the Radeon installed. Thanks for the help.

Have you checked your memory, Most illegal operations are caused by more than one program running at the same time but I worked on a friends and his memory was the problem, You never know I would check my power suply to
