I have just bought a used PIII 800 MHz CPU to upgrade one of my old computers and can't get it working. Here is the old setup:

Soyo SY-6BA+III motherboard
Abit Slotket !!!
400MHz Celeron PPGA (SL37X)
PC133 SDRAM

JP8 on motherboard set to 66MHz.
Slotket set all to auto and PPGA CPU.

This setup has been running fine for the last 3 or 4 years. The new CPU is a 800MHz PIII (SL4CE). I removed the jumper on JP8 to set the motherboard to 100MHz FSB, and switched the Slotket to Coppermine CPU. I expected to be able to make all other changes in the BIOS. When I press the power button all I get are continuous long beeps with a short pause.

Any ideas on what could be wrong? According to the seller of the CPU it was working fine. I don't have any other motherboards to test it in.

Thanks

check your beep codes ...
(you did try clearing CMOS ...?)

You were running PC133 ram at 66mhz beforehand...?

Beep codes say long beeps = memory error, but it works fine if I just switch out the CPU.
I cleared the CMOS several times while trying different jumper settings.
Yes, I was running the PC133 RAM at 66MHz (one 64MB Corsair, one 128MB Infineon).

All beeping has stopped for some reason - still no post, or usual startup beep. I was trying the RAM in different slots and combinations. The screen never comes on.

Mixing RAM can produce unexpected results.

I'd try the 128 stick by itself first.
(and remove any other components not needed for bootup)

You need to be methodical. Take your time.

Also ,,, the 800mhz chip requires 1.70v ...? I'd make sure your not overvolting the chip.

Try swapping ram. I just built my system (rebuilt actually, the mobo died), and my Shuttle mobo did the same sound, but I swapped ram and it works fine. But the old ram works fine in my other box...oh well. Some boards (such as mine) are picky with ram.

Thanks for the help guys. I have put the old CPU back in since I need to use that computer.

I have tried everything that I can think of. It looks like either the CPU is dead, the CPU is incompatible with my system, or there is still some setting that I have missed. I'm going to try and find another system to test the CPU in to verify that it is working.
