Need help getting a serial mouse set up on win98.

It's not really a serial mouse, it's a PS/2 on an adapter pluged into com1, whenever I start windows i get this message saying that there is no mouse present. I'm assuming this is simply because i havn't figured out how to configure the com port correctly. Any pointers??

I know that some serial mice will not work on a PS/2 port when you use a serial mouse to PS/2 port adapter. You need special circuitry on serial mice to enable them to work with an adapter.

Are you sure the mouse you have is capable of working through a serial port adapter?

For all the serial mice I've used I've never had to do anything special with the operating system. They were always automatically detected and set up.
 
A PS/2 mouse with an adapter does not a serial mouse make. Unless it is specifically designed and contains the additional wiring required and is called a PS/2-Serial mouse it will not work. A Microsoft PS/2 mouse is one of those that doesn't work although at one time they did make a PS/2-Serial mouse that included adapters for both, I haven't seen one of those for quite some time.
 
hmmm, well i suppose that would be the answer. The fact being that I'm using a microsoft mouse. Wish I'd asked this sooner, been beatin my brains out over this one. Thanks.
 
dkozloski is right. I had this problem before. The mouse must be compatible with the type of connection you want to use, whether it be PS/2, Serial, or USB.
Although if possible, I believe PS/2 is the best connection for input peripherals such as keyboards and mice.

Btw, I have an old AT motherboard that comes with a serial port for a mouse, but I want to hook up a PS/2 mouse to it rather than serial. The motherboard pins for the PS/2 mouse is a 9pin connector (5pin and 4pin). It's an old motherboard, but does anyone know where to find this 5/4 pin PS/2 mouse connector? The stores only carry 8-pin connectors. Thanks!
