I am looking for a laptop. I know I want the centrino processor and cd-rw. I would also like a 15" screen. the wide would be better but not needed. Also it needs to be around 7.5lbs or lighter. What are good brands? I found this and was wondering about it.

THis is going to be used for internet and stuff like that. Not for games

Looks good. Similar deals are everywhere though - I just got a Toshiba Celeron-M 1.5 for $599 about 3 weeks ago. Shop around - the Acer looks expensive for what you're getting.

Check techbargains/bensbargains - there are listings to Toshiba laptops (Celeron Ms) for $599 still, just not quite as loaded as mine is.

Performance difference per clock between Celeron M and Pentium M is nearly nil - but battery life isn't as good since the Celeron M can't clock itself to a lower frequentcy as efficiently. If you can live with slightly shorter battery life, you're all set with these $599 deals.

If you don't mind a 15" XGA screen, check out the HP model (can't remember model #, go to their site and its the lowest price on there :p). You can get a Celeron M or P-M pretty cheaply. However, if you're going to go Celeron M, I would find one of those Toshibas. I like the cheap Toshiba's better than I do the cheap HP's, esp since there are a number of cheap Toshiba Celeron M's w/15.4" screens. If you don't mind a smaller screen, the HP dv1000 can be configured QUITE nicely for around $1000. It has a 14" widescreen (brightview or regular), 40-80GB drive, Celeron M or P-M. Very nice. My girlfriend just ordered one with a P-M 1.7, 40GB, 256MB (she has another stick of 256, soo), wifi, BrightView, & 12-cell batt and it came out to be like $1100. Not too shabby IMO
Head over to your local Best Buy & check out the Gateway models too. They don't get below $1000, but are pretty nice as well and can be had with instant rebates. GL

I'm still pleased about the Gateway M505 deal I got - Centrino 1.4 with Radeon 9600 graphics 64MB, 40G, CDRW/DVD, 15.4" WS, 512MB, all for $1000, with no rebates. :) Added another $30 and dropped in an Intel Wireless G card (it came with Wireless B - bleh), and I'm all set.

(I really wanted the Radeon graphics.)
