Need Help : Geforce 4 mx420 VS. Geforce 2 GTS

Hi

Guys I am trying to help a friend to decide if he should upgrade that video card. Right now he has a Geforce 2 GTS 32MB DDR and was given a PNY Geforce 4 mx 420 64MB SDR. Is it worth upgrading? How much better with Over Clocking?

the GF4 MX series is basically a suped up GF2, genereally the GF4 MX would be better but im not sure in this case because your GF4 MX is SDR, it would help at higher rezes but bandwidth to memory sucks. Best way is just to have your friend run a test on the GF2, then pull it out and run some test on the GF4MX, it doesn't take too long to switch if you know what your doing (2 mins? + testing time).
 
I have just gotten the geforce 4 mx 420, and it's better then the geforce 3 Ti 200.

You can notice because in the same game I play i notice better shadowing and color.

It's not a bad card, especially for 54.oo on pricewatch.

It'll probably run most games pretty well until the more exspensive cards drop in value.

Yes definitely something wrong. The TI200 owns the MX420 in absolutey every respect. Pixel shaders, vertex shaders, umm....fill rate, memory bandwidth, umm....SPEED PERIOD. Did you like, not have the ti200 installed? Or maybe it like wasn't working at all and you just had a black screen...I guess that would make the mx200 look better. Other than that I"d have to say you're crazy.

Anyway I know the G4 mx440 is a bit better then the G2 GTS in some benchmarks so may be the mx420 would be a bit slower then the G2 GTS?

The GTS will beat it hands down. The MX420 uses SD ram. Non-ddr. It doens't have the memory bandwidth to be competitive with the GTS. The 440 does though.
 
Having a friend who needed my help tweaking his GF4MX 440 and having another friend using my old GF2 GTS...the only thing even the 440 really has going for it is that it can do quincux and the GF2 GTS can't. It isn't worth the upgrade unless you at least get a GF3 Ti 200 (and overclock it, of course!).
If the color looks better on YOUR GF4MX, then that has more to do with the specific GF3 card you had.
