Need help from Thinkpad owners.

I have only 128MB of RAM. I bought this generic stick of 256MB of RAM that was CAS 3, pin144 SO DIMM, PC-133. When I installed it, my T23 would not boot up, but it would be several times then quit. It would not boot up after the beeps. The screen would remain unlit.

I was wondering if I could get away with buying non IBM branded memory. Perhaps some PC133 stick that is "compatible" with the Dell Inspiron 8100? RAM prices are crazy, and so is IBM. $31 for a 64MB stick? Give me a break!

What are my options?

Yup I've got a T21 came with 128, added in a stick of crucial 256. Works fine, you probably jsut got some junk generic stuff.

IBM does use good stuff tho, my original 128 is infineon chips

I've used non-IBM memory in my Thinkpads before. The T23 Type 2647 wants CAS2 PC133, the Type 2648 wants CAS2 PC100 - maybe it doesn't like the CAS3 - I've found IBM stuff to be very picky about using the exact rated stuff.

Crucial has the PC133 256MB for $84.99, $67.99 for the PC100.

Crucial is expensive🙁 $85.00 with 15% off. It stinks. I want generic RAM!🙂 I just want to know if it will work.

I'm using 2 x 256MB sticks of Crucial SDRAM in my Thinkpad T22. Works beautifully!

As far as getting away with cheap RAM, 99.9% of the time you're getting what you pay for. If you're concerned about your system stability, dont' even think about no-name generic brand, you can see from your experiece what happens.
