I don't think knowing how to compute an average in excel qualifies one as a guru...

That being said...

=AVERAGE(B14:M21)

Yup, and it took .7 seconds out of my otherwise boring life of useful excel tasks.

Though an assignment on average would have to be grade 5 or 6 no?

Averaging the average of each row will give you a different result than taking an average of all the applicable data.
Yes, but only in months that are not January ;) (and only if one has excel set up to treats those blank spaces as 0)

Average from Jan 01-Dec 08: 5.3
Average of all data: 5.8
Average of the averages of each line: 5.9
Average of the averages of lines 01-08: 5.3
