Need help from DSLR experts

Pic

I think the ISO is 800. There seems to be a lot of banding near the top. It also appears on a bunch of other pictures I took.

I never noticed this problem until just now.

That does look like a sensor problem, but I have never seen that before.

Does it do it at all ISO settings, or only 800+, where the pics are grainy, so you notice it more?

Sorry.

Did some more research on the pic.

Its f/2.0 @ 1/100sec ISO800.

I saved it in jpg and had to compress to fit bbzzdd.

The camera is a Canon EOS 20D using a 50mm f/1.4 lens.

"Banding" is a term being loosely thrown around by the peeps over at DPreview's EOS-20D forum...people making a mountain over an ant hill issue...

I'm not seeing the banding either.

OP: are you using an LCD or CRT?

[EDIT]I see you've recompressed it, can you cut out some problem areas from the original & post those? Or send me the original & I'll host it for you.[/EDIT]

For an EOS-20D at ISO800, it does seem like more noise than I would expect...but like someone else said, I don't notice the banding...

My bad. I looked at the wrong pic.

Its 1/50 sec at ISO 3200 at f/1.4.

That might explain it.

I was freaking out because of a lot of bad looking pictures.

How's about an uncompressed image?
I viewed the pic full size and could see strings of noise running left to right. My guess is that it's just how the pixels landed on compression.
Try a longer shutter and maybe (God forbid) a fill flash.

Just for comparison sake, here are two random samples taken with my EOS-20D with Canon 17-85mm F4.0 IS lens.

Maybe its my eyes playing tricks on me but the noisy areas look like they have banding.

yep... Cameras do weird crap at that high ISO. I don't even like doing 800 on my 300D because of it.

I personally don't see any banding on my DELL 2001FP 😀

I see what's talking about now.

Look at where the kid's hair meets his forehead.

I think it may be a drawback to the 20D's CMOS sensor, but I am unsure as to how common it is. Do you have the latest firmware installed? Perhaps do a search for "banding" at these forums'.

I'll check out the site. I have firmware 1.1.0.

Thanks for the hosting.

Hmm.

I've got a 21" Sony G500 about 1.5 feet from my eyes. You don't see some banding in the lower left quandrant in the ISO 1600 pic?

Do a search as I recommended. Some serious banding pics over there to clearly demonstrate the problem. Then compare yours to that.

If it were me taking that shot, I would have gone all the way to F1.4 and decreased my shutter speed.
