First, Thanks in advance!

I don't have the fundanmental background of programing. Which book should I learn/read first? any suggestion?

I believe Java is the hottest programing language around right now. What's the requirement or the basic that is needed first in order to learn Java? or I can just learn Java right a way?

I would buy your used programing book, but first I need to know what's the hottest language in the market right now!

Also, how do I get a certificate by Oracle, SAP or any other ERP company? What do I need to know in order to take those tests? Where can I take those tests?

I'm currently majoring in Management Information System under Business Administration.

Please let me know or direct me as much as you could... *I'm pretty lost in the wood* :(

Deeply, Truely Thanks for reply!!!!

*EDIT* Where can I get a Java program for those book? *EDIT*

Java is the hottest language in college right now. However, C++ is still the king of all, although they are somewhat similar, (Java has no pointers). eg, almost all Microsoft applications (windows 2000..etc) are written in C++. So it really depends what you'd like to learn. If you have never programmed before, i'd suggest you go to your nearest bookstore and pick up "Thinking in Java" or "Core Java" and see if you can read it without too much difficulties. If you find it too difficult, then try "Beginning Java 2 ".

As for C++, i strongly recommend "object-oriented programming in C++" to start with. It is a very easy read and you will get a quick grasp of the whole concept of programming.

By the way, don't buy any Dietel books if you are beginner, they are meant for intermediate programmers since its written in a high style.

i personally like the dietel books myself. i find theyre a lot easier to read than the other stuff out there. i think that if you challenge yourself with harder stuff youll meet that challenge...so why not go with more advanced stuff?

Well, Dietel's material is not really challenging and it's too wordy and has a lot of unneeded sentencecs.

If you want to read more advanced stuff read something like C++ premier.

Thanks for the reply!

I guess I'll pick up books that Valhalla suggested.

So the final suggestion is either C++ or Java.

FOBSIDE: Is dietel book for beginner?

Books will only give you basic and fundamental knowledge about a computer language... This is the same no matter what books you choose...

So my suggestion is get 1 or 2 books mentioned above, and do lots of practice while reading them... You gotta try and do some stuff and solve problems before you understand a language fully, and remember what you read...

I found that out first hand when I was learning Java from books... What I remember from simply reading was very minimum... But after doing a project in Java, you will remember without even trying...

Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply BCYL!

Valhalla: Do you have the ISBN for "Object-oriented programming in C++"?

the one similar is called "C++: Effective Object-Oriented Software Construction".

are they the same one?
