Need help for new desktop computer build

Hi,

My old laptop finally crapped out.
Instead of another one, I'm looking for a new desktop, but I have no idea on where to start with parts.

I'm looking for a decent gaming PC build for about $800, excluding monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers. I have no brand preference, I'll be buying parts in the US, and I plan on running the system at default speeds. All advice is much appreciated.

Thanks

Try reading some of the threads on the front three pages of General Hardware. They're all much the same and there are usually half a dozen threads similar to yours which will give you a taster of what to be looking for. Read some articles on anandtech's main site and browse this subforum a bit more, do some research!

You're nonetheless going to end up looking at something very like this:
Gigabyte DS3L motherboard
Intel E4500 CPU
MSI 8800GT GPU
4GB G.Skill DDR2-800
Seasonic 440W PSU/Corsair 520HX
etc

I don't really want a system with vista... and building one would be much cheaper... more bang for the buck.

I was also wondering if this is an ideal and stable build or if it's just stuff you came up with off the top of your head, thanks
