I have an Asus K7V motherboard, with an AMD Athlon 750 Slot A processor. I want to get a 1 GIG Athlon chip. Can I put the "Thunderbird" processor in? It says it is a socket A. Is that different from Slot A?
EDIT: It seems they are two different slots. Is there an adpater for this? (slot A -> Socket A)

As far as I know, there is no adapter. However, the Thunderbird CPUs are available in Slot A. Its just a bit harder to find them. I do not know if the 1GHz TBird is available in Slot A though....

Also the slot A's are 0.25 micron processors. The socket A's are 0.18.... Meaning lot's of heat on the slot A device.. And not the most stable.

not so. the newer Slot A Athlons are also 0.18. I am running a Classic 800 on a Asus K7V and its been one of the most stable systems that I have had. It does produce a lot more heat than my 2 Celeron systems though.

I am also curious if a Slot A TBird will work in a Asus K7V. I have heard success with the K7M but have heard nothing on the K7V side.

TBIRDS are a no-go on the K7V because of the VIA KX133 chipset. You might be OK with 750mhz but higher speeds are pretty much useless. ASUS offered the K7V-T which supports BIRDS, some people have modded their K7V's with some success. AMDZONE had a large thread with the info and results, check 'em out.

Thanks for the info DaddyG

My system is currently plenty fast for my needs. I may overclock later, but its running ok for now.

My next system will be a dual Duron or dual Thunderbird. :D

I think that the fastest Slot A T-Bird is the 1GHz, and I think that AMD said that's as far as they're going to go.
