Fellow At'ers,

I have been using windows for as long as I can remember. I have never used a mac before but now at a new workplace they want us all to buy our own macs before we get there.

so tell me AT'ers, which websites do I use to find a good deal on the apple laptop..I am not going to be any intensive memory hogging stuff, just using a software client all day to log into sap, so what type of apple laptop should I buy. thnx

mods: I dont know if this request should go here or in the deals forum...thnx

A bit high for a Powerbook. You are getting a bigger screen than the Macbook, but I would personally go that route, unless you need a 15" or larger screen. Then I would hit up eBay. There are lots of great deals there, but you have to be careful, as with all eBay purchases. You can get a decent discount buying refurb'd from the Apple Store, or you could hit up Mac Mall. They seem to be reputable and my friend got his Macbook for a couple hundred under retail.

I agree, you should go macbook unless you need the 15" screen. I'd stick with the intel processors, at least you would be somewhat future proof then. The G4s are slowing fading out. I upgraded my powerbook g4 with a macbook pro last week, and the difference in speed is pretty remarkable.

just get a macbook unless that software is for some reason in dire need of a graphics card.

the real question is why are YOU required to buy this.. shouldn't this be a company issued item?

Agreed. I would question them as to why they don't provide this themselves.

What if you you quit a month down the road and are left with a $2k macbook you don't really want or need.

i hope it's a really well paying job... seems like a bad deal to have to provide your own hardware.

If they let you choose I would almost rather provide my own hardware so that I could technically do whatever I would like with it. If your job provides it, it saves a bit of green but you can't take all of your stuff with you or easily get upgrades if your job won't cover it. There are pluses and minuses for both situations in my opinion.

Good point. I am thinking from my POV, which lets me do whatever w/ our hardware, given I set them all up, haha.

I'm in agreement. My job has a ton of macs for me to use, but I use my MBP day in and day out. Install whatever I want and use it the way I want to. Same with my cell phone. I'd prefer to pay for the useage every month if that means I don't have to give up my phone and number every time.
