I want to teach my kid the right things..

This is a nice rhyme, but I need to find out what the original verse is.

Eeny meeny miny mo, catch a tiger by his toe, if he hollers let him go, eeny meeny miny mo.
Eeny meeny miny mo, catch a tiger by his toe, if he hollers make him pay fifty dollars every day.

I was told that the original rhyme had the n_gger (in place of tiger) word in it. If it did, I won't be teaching this rhyme to my kid.

I tried to search for the origin of the rhyme, but couldn't find it.

If someone could find a link to a dependable site that would explain the origin, I would greatly appreciate it.

Pretty sure that 'n_gger' (stupid filter!) was the original version - don't have a link to confirm that at the moment.

Another good one is Agatha Christies famous book - Ten Little Indians (based on a poem).

It wasn't always indians...

It started off as "Ten Little N*ggers". When that was found to be a little inappropriate, it was changed to "Ten Little Indians" In the US, the book was released as, "And Then There Were None"

info

It's a GREAT story, btw...

I'll tell you what I found far more offensive... my daughter learned the song as "Ten Little Angels."
Really pissed me off, I'd much rather her learn it as indians. We're not christians, and I don't think her school had any right to do that. It's only at the urging of my wife that I didn't go down there bitching up a storm.

Ironic that you don't mind the poem as long as it is offensive to someone else...

It was the n-word when I was a kid in the early 50's. Then it was injuns - but by the early 60's that was offensive too. Then it was tigers. Waiting to see who's offended by that.

From here :
In America, a formerly popular verse gave the second line as "catch a n*gger by the toe," which in some eyes has tainted the entire rhyme. Originally the phrase was "catch the n*gger by his toe." This predated black slavery and was a reference to the devil. The devil having cloven hooves wuold have no feeling in his toes, so the rhyme was a way of detecting Old Nick from an innocent.
