My mom and I were having a recent conversation about this and the name of this show is escaping us.

Back when in the mid to late 80's, my mom took me to a live taping of a variety type kids show in New York City (it was either at an MTV studio or a Nickelodeon studio). The day we went they had the dog from Turner and Hooch on with their trainer as a guest.

We first were thinking it was 'You can't do that on television', but it looks like that show was only filmed in Canada.

Any ideas what the show may have been?

My Google-Fu indicates it may be The Kidsongs TV Show
"Kidsongs started out as a series of home videos aimed for children under the age of 10 before going out as a syndicated TV show which ran from 1987-1988 and then on the Disney Channel from 1989 to 1992." - source

Might be the episode you mentioned:
http://www.amazon.com/A-Kidsongs-Kid.../dp/B008H54344

Also, that dog trainer (Clint Rowe) trained White Fang in addition to Hooch (Beasley the Dog) and other dogs used in movies. Pretty awesome.

Wow, nice find! This "may" be it actually, at least part of it. I see this episode aired in 1994, but the dog died in 1992. I faintly recall them recording two shows while i was there, and this may have been the segment with the dog as it even looks like its from the late 80's.

Searching for more PBS kids shows, i found 'Square One Television' which was recorded in NY and sounds amazingly familiar. I wonder if i saw segments from both of these shows being filmed.

Anyway, thanks for the help! This may indeed be the show.

Glad to help! It's frustrating trying to remember stuff from your childhood and not being able to do so. Took me a little while to find "The Bots Master", which is still a fantastic cartoon to rewatch on YouTube.

PBS had some good kids shows in the 90s, I remember enjoying Ghostwriter and Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? Ghostwriter was my favorite, as it was set in NYC and the kids seemed more 'real' (racially diverse) and representative of where I grew up than some of the other more commercially produced shows. Looking at IMDB, Julia Stiles and Samuel L. Jackson were in a couple of episodes of Ghostwriter. Wow, didn't know that.

EDIT: Haha, here's Julia Stiles. Love Julia Stiles. Hilarious.
