Need help finding the name of a song and the artist.

Last night, while I was waiting at the drive-thru for my bag 'o burgers, I caught part of this song on the local Jazz station. This one was a WOW! Powerful, hit you in the face type. I WANT this song.

It was kind of a ballad/soul/blues mixture done by a female singer. But, she sounded older then these teeny-boppers that seem so popular nowadays. I think it was the life story of a ghetto girl and her struggles.

I only have a few snippets of the words, and I don't know how close these are, but maybe one of you songophiles can figure out who it is:

You got a fast car, maybe we can go somewhere...

I got a good job, working as a checker at the grocery store...

You don't have a job, but maybe you'll get one some day...

Any ideas who this is? Name of the song?

The whole album is great, but Fast Car is a real gem. In fact, I think I'm gonna cue it up and listen to it--It's been a while.

j/k, I'm just surprised you asking where to actually PURCHASE music didn't get more comments like that in here. Seems to be less and less of us who think paying for music is better than stealing it. Maybe its our old fashioned values, eh Russ?

I can't believe you're only now discovering Tracy Chapman, Russ. You'll love the album. My favourite song is &quot;Baby Can I Hold You&quot;, one of the most moving love songs I've ever heard.

Tracy Chapman is no beauty queen. But oh my Lord, she has soul.

Count me in that group. I don't do it out of any particular moral conviction, though, I did have a few (like fewer than 10) MP3's that I didn't own the CD for. But my CD collection is up to 150 now, if I like a song I buy the CD. I'm addicted to CD's I think.

Well, I'm not really much in to music these days; don't even own a stereo, so about the only time I ever catch any is when I'm driving somewhere. But, this will make a nice addition to the handful of CDs I have here at the shop.
