Need help finding the best place to buy an Apple Laptop

I need to find a Apple laptop for our school's newspaper production class. Basically it must be decent, run Word, Pagemaker, etc. I have no experience whatsoever buying Mac hardware, so I have no idea where to go. I can spend between 1000-1200 bucks. Anyone have some assistance for me?
