Cheaper to just buy an external cd drive. Do a search for Backpack cdroms.

more RAM: crucial.com (look up at this top of this page)

CD drive: ebay & google for toshiba (would just be a reader, not burner) -or- an external drive. Most are firewire/USB so yes you'd need a firewire or USB PCMCIA/PC Card. Buy.com, compgeeks.com are good places to look for the card. Buy.com, Sunday paper & Hot Deals forum are good places to look for the drive.

Back when I had my 166mhz Gateway laptop, the backpack cd drive I had was a parallel port one. It is possible that the computer has usb ports depending on what release of Win95 it was originally built for.

even though windows 95 version c and i believe b supported usb, it does not do it reliably. parallel port if drives even exist for it is your best bet if you insist on upgrading your laptop. but i'd rather just install win98se, then use a usb drive.

Check what kind of CD drive it has and if its removable. If it is, look for something similar to that drive in terms of connection and size.

aga, the problem therein lies, that the laptop is in cali, im in ohio. he is coming in on the 27th, and needs to have all the parts, and assembly done by the 6th when he goes back to cali.

The current cd drive is toast, i have 98se, and will proll reformat it to support usb, and just get an external drive, with a pcmcia card for it. i think i can find a model similar to it, my friend has one i believe, not sure how old, but it is a toshiba and pretty old, and hefty, will check.

so i will just prolly go to newegg, buy a external cdrw drive (do they sell laptop external drives, or backpack external drive (i am correct in assuming that is what they are called right?)) and a pcmcia card for it, then to crucial for the memory.

d'oh! hard to believe, but out of curiosity I checked Kingston and no joy there either. This must've been back when Toshiba still used non-standard memory modules and no one makes them (anymore). Any place you might find them like CDW or Toshiba itself probably charges some horrendous fee to rip off corporate buyers.

When pricing a drive & PC card, it might make sense to also price a refurb P2 / P3 laptop which might even come with a CDRW.

ok, for an external cdrw/dvd combo slim drive + pcmcia 2 port firewire card, i total 200 shipped. i cant find a computer for that price, although a new computer would be the smart way to go, i highly doubt i can convince him. no good refurbs around from what i see

hehe, who woulda thunk it, my total at newegg w/ shipping for the asus slim cdrw/dvd combo, and a pcmcia 2 port IEEE card, comes to...

199.99!!!!!

i told him, that if this laptop is to be solely used in one location, and just for internet/word useage, i could build him a computer for 200$ w/o monitor. Now i need to figure out what that will get.

WHY DO HD'S ALWAYS SCREW YOU OVER (cost wise) WHEN BUILDING A CHEAPIE!!!!!!

One thing to consider: if your uncle buys a refurb machine he can sell the toshiba on ebay or through you in FS/FT -- even without a working CD he'd likely get $100.

hey it's eBay, they'll buy anything!

hmmm, (checks specs) pentium 120, 640x480 256-color, 1.2GB HD -- maybe not :)

It would make an OK portable word processor if you found a copy of Word 95 or an old Lotus or Corel WP.

Don't spent anymore money on this Laptop. Not worth it. Also the 430CDT maximum ram is 48MB total.

If you just need a laptop at one location I personally would purchase a used Dell PII/PIII Laptop on Ebay. If you look around you might find a deal that includes a CDRW drive. Otherwise go with the option of building a budget computer. Last year I bought a Dell PII 400Mhz Laptop on Ebay 13.1" LCD for $350. I installed a 40GB 5400rpm hard drive and it works just fine and even runs Windows XP quite well.
