need help finding author/title of book! :confused;

please help me- this is driving me nuts...

i am trying to find the author/title of a piece of classical literature. the basic theme revolves around hell/purgatory. I believe it is about 3 people who are stuck in an empty room together, who find out that hell is not what they imagined it to be, but is their own personal hell and they are forced to face their fears/insecurities continually.
i don't believe it's by an american author, and i don't think it's dante's inferno.
