Need help finding a windows 2000 admin password

I am trying to fix up a junker computer for a friends dad. I am going to install a newer version of norton on it.

The problem is that the computer has a corporate version of norton on there and to uninstall it I need the admin password...

I don't think that the corp version on there can be updated anymore...at least from what I can see so that is why I want to uninstall it

Anyone know how to go about getting that ?

this isnt the local adminstrator account. he needs the password for the NAV server.

you arent getting that off unless you nuke the installation.

Ok, can you please explain what you mean by nuking the installation ?


This PC is a throw away from my friends father-in-laws company...so I don't know what I am going to do as far as getting a NAV server password...

If you can explain any details that might help me I would appreciate it

Yes, but its next to useless if the parent server was doing liveupdate. It won't be able to contact the parent server for new defs if its no longer on the network.

symantec is the default password, as mentioned, give that a try.

I'd just reinstall windows anyways...
 
They have a link to a removal .bat and files hidden in the deep dark depths of the symantec site, it will remove all 1000000 symantec registry entries too
 
you're father-in-law's company did a horrible job on security if they just throwaway their computers without wiping them.

just format and reinstall windows

I would have reinstalled windows already but the problem I fear is that I don't have any drivers for this POS, right now I have the modem working but it has on-board video and a motherboard like no other that I have ever seen...so I am afraid that if I do go ahead and format it I will be worse off that before.

I do believe that it updates from a parent server because the last update it had recorded on it was from 03

I am trying to invest as little time as possible in fixing this thing up...and thought an added bonus of anti-virus would be nice maybe he won't be getting it if I can't figure a way to get this to work

If it's the same version of Symantec that the company installed, then you won't be able to use it. Even if you got it working it would be a violation of the license.

Just uinstall it and download one of many free antiviruses. AVG, Avast, AntiVir, BitDefender...
 
Call that company's president and say "May I pretty please have the password to the computer your IT dept. threw out unformatted?"

You should get the desired effect you seek.

Yeah, you can reinstall LiveUpdate with a download from Symantec's, so corporate NAV will point to the Symantec site for the downloads.

OR, you can attempt a manual uninstall of Corporate NAV, which means that you need to stop all the NAV services and remove the following folders:

C:\Program Files\NavNT
C:\Program Files\Symantec (don't do this if you have other Symantec products like PcAnywhere installed!)

Also, kill all of the "Symantec" and "NavNT" registry entries. Reboot, and NAV should be dead.

I could put xp on here but it would be dog ass slow...it only has like 64 mb of memory...and it is already so slow right now I would hate to bring it to a halt with xp

XP will run faster than 2000 if you disabled many of the default services (likes themes and such).

So are you asking about the password to the machine, or to Symantec? If access is denied because you don't have administrative priveleges, then there is not much you can do. 2k passwords are stored as hashes in the SAM file. The full passwords are actually never stored on the machine.

OK... Go into Safe Mode, rename those two folders, and reboot. That should stop the services the HARD way.

Or just put the drive into another computer and delete the folders.

He could use erdcommander to change the local admin password, log on locally and uninstall sav.
