My parents are moving from their old house to a new house in the same city (Troy, MI) and need a moving company to move the furniture and items. Any recomendations from those that have moved in this area? Are there any moving companies that wont screw them?

Thanks in Advance

My sister and brother-in-law hired "Two Men and a Truck" last time they moved. I'm sure you've seen ads for them. They were happy with the job they did and the price. I was there for part of it and they moved really quickly and made sure all the big furniture and stuff was packaged nicely so it didn't get destroyed.

Thanks for the info, Two men and a Truck is one company we are considering although their estimate is pretty high (but who knows what that means in this shady industry ;))

We are considering

Two men and a truck
Labor Ready (they want $15/hr but we provide the truck)
Moving with Janet
Allied
Cherokee Van Lines
and Preferred moving and storage

If you don't get enough recommendations, your state Attorney General's office might be able to tell you which ones to avoid, by which ones have the most complaints.

The BBB seems to be pretty toothless these days but you can try them too.

after much searching on craigslist and google, when i had something moved from NJ to NY i finally ended up with some people from an ad in a newspaper.

Try you local newspaper listing.

Here in WA movers have to be registered with and licensed by the state, which offers you a little protection.

Guys from an ad is probably cheaper, but if they load up the truck and just drive off you might feel a little foolish :)

Hey I live in Troy too. Although I'm going to school in Boston, I'm back for the summer. Why don't you just get some of your buddies to help ya out one weekend, just rent a UHAUL. Give em some money and free food/beer, and your moving is done.
