Need help finding a country song

Pretty sure it is a duet. A guy and a girl.

The girl might be Dolly Parton.

In the song, the guy is a lot older than the girl.

He says something similar to "I'll come back for you"

They finally meet again and one of them is already taken.

Something like "turns out forever was too long"

Anybody have any idea?

No I seriously don't know who sings it or what it's called.

I don't listen to much country, not even 100% sure that's how it goes.

Artist/Band: Wariner Steve
Lyrics for Song: I'm Already Taken
Lyrics for Album: Two Teardrops
(Terry Ryan/Steve Wariner)

My little third grade hand wrote I love you
On a note of yellow paper
And sent it to the front of the row to a little blonde-haired girl
The blonde-haired girl just opened it and read it to herself
I was so embarrassed when she turned around and said

I'm already taken
You spoke up too late
I love somebody else
So you'll just have to wait

The years flew by so quickly
And there we were in junior high
I realized that I still loved her so
So I called her up and told her exactly how I felt
Then she said there's something that you really ought to know

I'm already taken
You spoke up too late
I love somebody else
So you'll just have to wait

So wait I did and never changed my love for that little blonde-haired girl
Whos' now the mother of our little blonde-haired boy
Who's to our hearts so close
I hate to think how fast he's growing up
Last night I overheard them as she tucked him into bed
He said, Mommy will you marry me
And this is what she said

I'm already taken
You spoke up too late
I love your daddy son
So you'll just have to wait

I'm already taken
You spoke up too late
I love your daddy son
So you'll just have to wait

That's not the one.

The one I am thinking of has a guy singing about a girl much younger than him.

They are waiting until she is old enough. By then it's too late.

EDIT: Lyrics:

Forever Took Too Long ©1998

(John Landry/Rich Baker/Godfrey Perry)

I've been trying, God knows how long,
to piece my heart back together,
now here I am, back in our hometown,
you never answered my letters.
Is you dad still workin' and how's your mom,
we haven't talked since last December,
I know it's been some time since I've been gone

but you said you'd wait forever.

Guess forever took too long,
Guess I shouldn't have left you, hangin' on,
Guess you couldn't wait, my leavin' was wrong
Guess forever took too long.

Was I the only one, who thought this would last?
If I was wrong, then you can tell me.
Now I don't mean to be, living in the past,
I just can't believe you don't love me.
How can you stand there and say the love has died,
you know I can still remember,
how you turned from me with tears in your eyes,
and swore you'd love me forever.

There's going to be about a million country songs out there that fit the criteria that you gave in your first post. You'll really need to be more specific.

If you heard it on the radio and remember about the time and date you heard it, you _might_ be able to call up the station and see if they keep a log of what songs they played and figure it out that way. When you do find out what song it was, please post the answer here, you've got me curious now.

I think it is a real popular song. I think it is a duet. I first heard it probably 4 years ago, but it is probably quite a bit older. I think the main line before the chorus is "turns out forever was too long"

If someone is familiar with the song, it seems like they would know it. But if I am wrong, then I am probably just confusing everyone.

Anyone have any details about this particular song to add? Anyone know what song I am talking about but can't think of the name?

The only other song that comes close in lyrics is a Dolly Parton song.

I Couldn't Wait Forever
(Dolly Parton)

I couldn't wait forever
Did you expect me to
I guess you thought I'd never
Find somebody new
I lived on dreams and promises
As long as I could
I couldn't wait forever
The way you thought I would
The lonely nights grew longer
As I prayed for time to fly
I lived on hopes that you'd return
And that's how I got by
The agony of loneliness
Just got too much for me
I couldn't wait forever
Needing love so desperately

So I found new lips to kiss me
New arms to hold me tight
I found new love and happiness
To fill these empty nights
You took my love for granted
Now my heart has found a new home
I couldn't wait forever
Forever's just too long
I couldn't wait forever
Forever's just too long

Nope, that's definitely not it.
Maybe it doesn't say "forever turned out to be too long"

I know for sure it talks about the girl being a lot younger than the guy.

I think Dolly Parton might be half of the duet.
But again this song talks nothing about the girl being younger.

Dear Travlen,

The song that you were looking for is called "Don't Cry Joni" by Conway Twitty in a duet with Joni Lee. Find a wave version at this site: http://www.ziplo.com/dontcry.html.

Don't Cry Joni

Jimmy please say you'll wait for me
I'll grow up some day you'll see
saving all my kisses just for you
signed with love forever true

Joni was the girl who lived next door
I've known her I guess 10 years or more
Joni wrote me a note one day
and this is what she had to say

Jimmy please say you'll wait for me
I'll grow up some day you'll see
saving all my kisses just for you
signed with love forever true

Slowly I read her note once more
then I went over to the house next door
her tear drops fell like rain that day
when I told Joni what I had to say

Joni, Joni please don't cry
you'll forget me by and by
you're just 15, I'm 22
and Joni I just can't wait for you

Soon I left our little home town
got me a job and tried to settle down
but these words kept haunting my memory
the words that Joni said to me

Jimmy please say you'll wait for me
I'll grow up some day you'll see
saving all my kisses just for you
signed with love forever true

I packed my clothes and I caught a plane
I had to see Joni, I had to explain
how my heart was filled with her memory
and asked my Joni if she'd marry me

I ran all the way to the house next door
but things weren't like they were before
my tear drops fell like rain that day
when I heard what Joni had to say

Jimmy, Jimmy please don't cry
you'll forget me by and by
it's been 5 years since you've been gone
Jimmy I married your best friend John.

Hope this helps you out!

All the best,
