For your sempron, pherhaps a 6600GT, 6800 vanilla or an X800 PRO?

It all depends on how much you are willing to spend.

I've found that with upgrades it is best to find the right balance for yourself between :spending money for little boost=money wasted, or :spending way too much money for a small boost over the mainstream cards. I'd recommend saving for something in the 6600GT range, simply because while the FX series offers dx9.0 support, they don't have the power to back up running in that mode in the first place, which is why HL2 forces most 5--- FX cards to run in 8.1 to make it more playable. A 6600GT on the other hand, could easily hold its own in lower resolutions for at least a few more years. *speculation*

it's going to be tough to find a really descent card at that range...unless you don't mind a really crappy one (sorry if i'd said this)

You probably don't want an FX card if your looking for decent DX9 performance.
Maybe a 9500 or 9600 would do you fine for that budget.

Wait, now once you said "so my games run a little better" and then you gave "so I can sell my system" as reasons for getting a cheap upgrade. Which is it? If you are upgrading for better game performance, save some coin up to buy a better card. If you are going to sell it, don't upgrade it at all and let the buyer pick a better card. Seriously that budget range isn't going to buy crap IMHO.

Yah ArchAngel, but you have to admit asking for a $30-40 video card that supports DX9 is like asking to put a trailer hitch on a geo metro so you can tow stuff with it. Can you do it? Maybe. But its going to run like crap. All of the FX 5xxx series cards SUPPORTED DX9, but you wont really want to. When HL2 came out, everyone pretty much said that yah the fx 5xxx series HAS support for DX9, but because of its performance, treat it like a DX8 card. I agree you shouldn't tell someone "hey your rig is crap its not going to sell". However I dont think putting a crappy video card in to replace an even crappier video card is a good idea. Like I said before, if he's going to sell it, let the buyer know that they can upgrade to a decent video card, dont shove some POS in there just to make it look better.

True, I do agree with that and always have. But two of those people did nothing except crap on his thead. You can make an opinion and that is fine, but saying a statements like "Your system will never sell" or "Your system isn't worth 10 bucks" are just completely lacking any form of social standards. It is like people go out of their way to crap on others. Some people indeed deserve to be crapped on, but the majority of people do not. I see nothing in the OP's post that warrents him to be crapped on by two people who did not even contribute to his thread. But you are right, *if* the seller is trying to sell his computer base on terms like DX9 capable and so on to take advantage of someone, then that is clearly wrong. However, no one has proof that this is his intention and therefore should not be mentioned until he gives evidence of it.

i have a MX400 currently

this is a good deal also

that 5200 is barely faster than your mx400, and probably loses to it in certain situations. a geforce 4200 is probably faster than the 5200 in every situation. the 4200 kills the 5200 ultra in many tests, and in others they're a wash, so an even slower 5200, like the one you linked to, won't be good for much.
