I'm sorry guys. I know there are a lot of posts like this. But my friend wants me to build him a comp with a budget of about 600-700 dollars. I know that I can't get the most updated hardware for that budget, but I know I should be able to go down the 64-bit path. I would like to keep most or all of my parts limited to newegg. He will be using it for games such as hl2 and other games of that nature. It doesn't need to be the most extreme thing, we can prob stick with a little older hardware if need be. If you can post some info on some good parts for a system that would help. You can include case if you'd like as well as ps and monitor. Mainly I need input on what cpu, ram, mobo to buy to fit the budget. I have made a couple lists, but I want your opinions. Thanks for your help.

CPU = Venice 3000+ - $146

Mobo: Chaintech VNF4 - $77

Ram: Corsair Value Select 512mb - $54

PSU & Case: Antec Sonata II - $119

$304 left for a video card, since your friend mentioned HF2, I highly recommend this:

Vid card: Connect3d 3028 X800XL - $289

Leaves him with $15 fromt he 700...now these prices include the shipping, but I am sure he will go over the $700 by a lil bit after taxes...but its ok considering he will be playing HF2/Farycry/Ut2004/CS : S on max settings with AA/AF turned up :). Oh I had to cut down the ram to 512 to include the x800xl, he can buy another 512 later on to make it 1GB.

if you can afford an extra $30 you can get a x800xl

Tigerdirect isnt the greatest place to buy parts from...

I haven't done it myself, but thought that rebates was their issue, are they crap for orders that don't have rebates too?

I am only going by what I hear, I hear they are very rude, poor customer service, and their return policies suck a lot. If you look at resellerrating, tiger direct has a horrible score and reviews. If you order something from them, you better hope it works, otherwise you aren't getting a replacement :p.

I like nicks suggestions. Except I would get the Hitachi drive as it is around the same price yet performs better. The difference won't be noticable, but it's not like your spending extra money for it.

Dell 4700 with 19" LCD monitor, 2.8Ghz P4 ... $479
ATI 800XL - $250
Total - $739.

Nothing to support, no fiddling around or late night calls from friends, works the first time, warranty from Dell..... priceless.

Add $40 or so for a 3.0 Ghz CPU. $29 for longer warranty. Fully legal.

You can upgrade whatever you like on Dell's order page. With computers being so cheap these days ($479 WITH the 19" LCD!!) I can't imagine going thru the hassles of building my own unless there was _really_ something specific that I just had to have.

You can stick a PCI-E card in it, so that will let you upgrade the video; most people wouldn't upgrade much else save RAM & hard drives/DVDs, and that's easy to upgrade.
