Need help figuring this out...

Ok, I am on a network here at school, and I just installed Win2K on this old P2 that I got. What I'm using it for is to share all of my files, but whenever I try to access from another computer by typing \\name it gives me a password prompt for the guest login. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to make it so that there is no password and everyone can get on it. Anybody have any ideas?

I did but it is still not working. Ok, when I click Add in the permissions menu and scroll down to guest there is a red x over the icon. This is the only one that has the x so I assume that is my problem. Is the guest account just not turned on, and if so how do I turn it on?

Hmmm....probably in the Computer Management in Admin Tools. In the Users and Groups section, check whether it's enabled. I don't know anything beyond that.

i have this problem too, can't figure it out

Evermore is right....by default the Guest account is disabled and you need to enable it. Also, are you trying to access the shared folder from Win98 machines?

From my experience.. Windows 2000 has to have the Remote User's name as and ACCOUNT. You need to create an random account for example "everyone" and then under windows 98 have everyone login name as "everyone" then you should be able to see each other.

there might be an easier way with guess permission.. but i'm too dumb to figure it out.

hope this helps

I don't want to create an account for everyone because there could be 100+ people accessing it. On my XP machine all I have to do is say share this folder and viola, just by typing in \\name any computer regardless of whether it is 2000, XP, 98 whatever can access it. That is what I would like to do here. Do away with the login and password and just let everyone who wants to access these files have access.

To enable the guest account, right click on my computer and select manage. expand users and groups and click on users. right click on guest in the right pane, and uncheck the box for account is disabled.

I don't believe that W2K has the option for simple file and print sharing (windows 98 style) that XP has. Don't put a password on the guest account and they can use that. If you map the share from the other computers, it will be much simpler for future use.
